New DiscScratchr 1.1 alpha released! If you're interested in beta testing or working at the aplication itself, please go to this forum topic...

DiscScratchr allows you to select a number of Scratch projects stored on your computer, and turn them into all files you need to burn a disc.

When you do, this disc will have the following features:
- Automatic Autorun
- Graphical project-selection menu
- Scratch projects open up in Presentation mode
- When you hit ESC or press the grey arrow the project closes and you see the menu again
- Button to explore files on a disc

> > > Download! < < <

No Scratch installation is required to run this disc, so you can take them anywhere. You could use it to...
- Create an archive of your Scratch Projects
- Show Scratch Projects in a classroom
- Share your Scratch projects with friends who don't want to install the Scratch application on their computer.
- etc

This new version is compatible with Scratch 1.3.1 and older but is still in it's very first release. Please, just test and tell me if you can find any bugs. It is not recommended to burn it to discs already .

How to use

Start up  DiscScratchr by opening discscratchr.exe. It is a wizard so it is very easy to use.

When the wizard finishes a bunch of files are created in the "\disc" directory. (can be opened automatically) Use any cd burning program to burn these onto a data cd. When it is inserted into any other pc (with or without Scratch) the disc will AutoRun and show the menu.

System requirements

Windows 95, 98(SE), NT, 2000, ME, XP, 2003, Vista. - Every windows  big_smile

discScratchr is compatible with scratch 1.3.1 and older, but every Scratch version starting from 1.3 is only compatible with Windows XP and newer.

Technical Notes

This version is completely new, none of the files of discScratchr 0.5 are used.

I gave up on those nasty batch scripts, the whole application is created with a free programming language called JustBASIC. It is very easy to learn/use...
The menu is also made with JustBASIC.

For running the scratch projects, I modified the Scratch 1.3.1 source code.

All JustBASIC source files are included in "\resource\source". Feel free to use.

For a discussion about the technical part of discScratchr, see this forum topic
Am I allowed to use the Scratch buttons in the menu?
And the (copyrighted) Scratch cat?

Oops... I forgot the note "Scratch is made by...". I'll add in the next release.

Joren

PS: All posts in this topic up to #56 (shown in the upper right corner) are about discScratchr 0.5 (an old version) and might be outdated.

Can you please make a mac port of this?

-----------------------

Do this on mac:

1)Make burn folder
2)Get CD and place it in mac
3)Drag .sb file into burn folder
4)Burn CD using burn folder
5)All Done!

Woo, even better minecraft clone! | I feel that programming is better than animation, because you can interact with games but not animations.

Sometimes antivirus programs will say that, but I don't think this one actually has any malware in it.

I'm taking a break from Scratch until 2.0 comes out. Any messages sent between then and now probably won't be read - sorry.

Re: discScratchr - Scratch discs for your friends, archives,...

Is it possible to put Scratch Projects to flash drives, SD cards? I want to show my other cousin about Scratch, and I am going to Poland to show her. But, to open the files, do you need Scratch? I have 2 computers, a Scratch-installed and a no-Scratch computer.

Hi KingOfGames. You can put all of Scratch on a flash drive. Just download the files-only-version of Scratch from the download page and unzip it to a flash drive. I use that method myself all the time.

I figured it out. I did it this way: Make a folder on the flash drive (if you are planning to have multiple updates on a project, go in the folder you made, and make a folder), then go to the \disc in the discScratch folder and copy the files in the \disc folder (Ctrl+C) then go to the flash drive, open the folder (then if you did more folders in the main folder, go into that one) and paste the files (Ctrl+V) and do this everytime you add a project to discScratch (idk)

Re: discScratchr - Scratch discs for your friends, archives,...

I have a question. It's not about DiscScratchr, but it's about Just BASIC.

How do you turn a .tkn file into a .exe? I created a little program and tokenized it, but I don't know how to turn it into a standalone application. I know it has something to do with the runtime engine. But one of the main problems is that I dunno what the runtime engine is.  sad

But if you still have a problem, just copy the jbrun111.exe and rename it to yourtoken.exe ore something. Make sure you include all DLL and SLL files.

That's one nice program - and I never thought I'd see that much be made in Just BASIC! (I use JB too).

Did you know what JustBasic and Scratch have in common? They're both implemented in Smalltalk (sorry, couldn't resist  smile  but check this out: http://www.nycsmalltalk.org/)

Jens - just figured it out a few days ago xD

But JustBasic does not have the squeak layer am I right?

And, I just found something out so a new DiscScratchr version will not take that long anymore.

Re: discScratchr - Scratch discs for your friends, archives,...

JSO, JustBasic / LibertyBasic / RunBasic are implemented in a commercial Smalltalk version (VisualWorks), which has the same execution architecture as Squeak. The developer, Carl Gundel, has also been active in the Sqeak community. I especially like his newest one, RunBasic, which builds on the Seaside framework (coming from Squeak) and lets users program websites from within a browser.

Thanks!

Be careful with using discScratchr, it is quite outdated. A new,  way better version will be released somewhere after the release of the *source code* of Scratch 1.4.

Re: discScratchr - Scratch discs for your friends, archives,...

I unsticked this topic, because the version that is available now does not work properly, and is not up to date anymore. I don't want people to waste discs when I know it is not going to work. When I release a new, fully working version, I will probable re-stick it. So.....

Thank you and... Scratch on!

I do not want to ruin my computer, so just in case, does it work on a Mac? If it doesn't could you make a version that works on the Mac?

No it doesn't work on a mac, and I don't have a mac so making one isn't a possibility for me either. Sorry  sad
