I know that some of you guys are Earthbound/Mother fans around here. I really want a copy of the game. However, I am not on quite enough drugs to buy it what it's going for online. I've looked in Goodwills and pawn shops with little luck.
However, I'm thinking of modding my SNES and getting Mother 2 for the Super Famicom, which is $20, which is around 0.1% of what an American copy is going for. One problem: I don't speak Japanese and since it's an RPG text is crucial to the game, especially a one like this that has a lot of humor and references. It's awkward to spend half of the time with the game translating the text online.
However, I've heard from my teacher (also a retro game collector) that many Japanese games have an English option. Does Mother 2 on the Super Famicom have this? I really want to play this game, but I'm not spending triple digits for it. I wouldn't even do it if it was freaking Ocarina of Time! So thanks in advance.

I'm a big earthbound fan.
Sorry, but there is no english option for the Japanese version of Mother 2. But you can type your character's names in english.
Your best bet would be to play Earthbound on your PC. Go somewhere like Retro Uprising. Otherwise, you'll have to spend a fortune on Ebay. Did you know that recently a piece of cardboard that comes with the game went on Ebay for $169?
Now I feel lucky that I happen to own the original cartridge... I wonder how I got it?
Anyway, I'm a know-it-all when it comes to this stuff. If you have any more questions about the MOTHER games, I'm your guy.

Is there any way I can play EarthBound online without downloading anything?

I'm not sure. If you're able to do it in the Java player on Retro Uprising, you can try that. Otherwise, you'll have to download arcadeox (only works on Firefox).
You could try other online websites too though (but IMO Retro Uprising is the best I've seen so far).

No problem!
I know all the secrets about the game, so if you need help just ask me. I know which enemies carry the ultimate weapons for each character, how to complete each quest, the weaknesses for most of the bosses, and so on.
