It usually doesn't take very long, but depends on whether a mod or Scratch Team member is on at the time. If you request a thread closed at midnight, it could be a while. But there isn't anyway to close topics, circumventing the mod/Scratch Team. Threads might be automatically closed if they haven't posted in for a while though (I've never heard of it, but it makes sense).

I noticed that you posted "this is getting a bit out of hand. but thanx. mods, close this." on one of your threads (I assume that is the one you're talking about). If you want a thread closed, just click "report" and tell them to close it. A comment can be easily missed by mods, while a report sends the mods a direct message.

Yup, as MoreGamesNow said, reporting your thread and asking for a close is the best way to get it closed. We can't check every topic in the forums, but we do check the reports regularly, so when one of us gets online we should be able to close it relatively quickly.
As a side note, threads in the old Miscellaneous used to be automatically closed after two weeks without any posts. I don't believe the same thing applies to the new MaC and RaP forums.

You're right, the automatic closing doesn't apply to the new forums. Show & Tell, Advanced Topics, New Scratchers, and Questions About Scratch threads close after two months of inactivity, though.

I thought there was another one or two, but I don't remember which.
