The icon for scratch does not display properly in the sidebar launcher of Ubuntu 11.10. In order to get the icon to display properly
StartupWMClass=Squeak
should be added to scratch.desktop.
If you are running other images with Squeak, it may stick the scratch icon on all of them. However, since most people aren't running squeak it should be ok. Or, is there some way for you to set WM_CLASS to a custom value in Squeak. Also settings WM_NAME would be nice to, instead of leaving it to be "/usr/lib/scratch/Scratch.image". Looks strange in the title bar.

Hmm. This response is quite cryptic so its meaning must be divined by trial and error.
It would seem that you are saying that the WM_CLASS and WM_NAME xprops are set properly on non-Ubuntu versions of Linux. This seems very strange. Could these props only be wrong on Ubuntu? Or, maybe they are only incorrect on 64-bit Ubuntu. This seems even stranger. I am not an expert on X, but having WM_CLASS vary between 32 and 64 bit versions is hard to believe. Alas, I don't know what you mean. Could you please clarify.

thanks so much! You don't know how long I've been wondering how to fix that! Now to find out where my uncle installed the scratch.desktop (he hides everything in the filesystem)

I not really sure but scratch can't be packaged properly due to limits of the licence although they have sorted the licence out now
