I'm making an operating system.

All scratchers welcome to help. It is going to be made using assembly. Post any good assembly language tutorials here, all ideas here, and anything that has to do with an os.

That's not contributing anything, and s/he can have whatever s/he wants as his/her signature.

Re: I'm making an operating system.

If you don't already know assembly I doubt you'll be able to make one. Make it in C instead.

I know some assembly, and C, C++, etc, etc, etc..... I know very little assembly, though. I tried to use assembly before, and worked pretty well; not very well though. Thanks for the tip  smile .

Re: I'm making an operating system.

Ok, who wants to make the graphics, startup sounds, cursors, etc.? Reward: 3 free .mp3 files of your choice.

The 2nd coder, 3rd, 4th, and 5th? (im'm first) Reward: 5 mp3 files.

The program maker/finder 1, 2, and 3?(every operating system needs some cool programs like scratch  big_smile ) Reward 7 mp3 files.

Oh, and do you need a separate bootloader, or can it be coded into the OS?

What format do you want cursors to be?

Well, you can always use SUSE Studio which is an online tool for customising a version of Open SUSE Linux for distribution or personal use  smile

I want to start from scratch. I want to gain some knowledge of asm, c, and c++. Do you know of any good tutorials?

Out of curiosity to figure out your level of knowledge, how long do you expect this will take? Also, what type of assembly are you using?

Re: I'm making an operating system.

OK, I'll be waiting for it when I'm all grown up! Like, if your starting from scratch, it'll take years to make a full OS.
LOL I capitalized scratch at first because that's how I'm used to doing it.  lol  And I did it again while writing this!

Okay you're wrong in both places

It'll take you several years and there's a type of assembly for each processor architecture.

Re: I'm making an operating system.

Assembly apparently isn't that hard. It's just you NEED to know what you're doing else you'll mess up your OS causing it to crash.

Even with a team of a ton of people and in a better language like C++, it still takes huge companies forever to make an OS from scratch.
