Re: 5 Years: My Scratch Story

Before I had used Scratch, I would 'program' my games with PowerPoint.  tongue
When I first opened Scratch, I was amazed at the things I could do with the blocks.

I actually noticed the main website some time ago, but didn't join until recently. I still remember Scratch 1.2. I still remember the time when projects could be frontpaged for several months at a time.
I was Lysinii, or something, back then.

I forgot about Scratch after my brief encounter in 2008.

Then, around 2010-2011, I started to become addicted to computers. I looked for a programming language to learn, and found Alice. It was interesting, but I didn't really enjoy it.

The website that I had read which recommended Alice also recommended Python, and C++, which I tried to learn from a book. It wasn't until I read another article on choosing a programming language that I found Squeak, and through it, Scratch.

I didn't even notice the forums until I clicked the link at the side of one of the projects, asking for feedback on the new Flash Player.

And then I became entirely addicted. I started to use Scratch more, a lot more. I began to use the forums. I began to learn to program, efficiently.

It can be hard to believe that I had never even heard of a 'forum' three months ago.

Re: 5 Years: My Scratch Story

After school club ended up introducing me to Scratch.

The next day, I downloaded it.

Epic times... Last year...

Re: 5 Years: My Scratch Story

I was introduced to Scratch though school as an introduction to programming in a game design class. It was only for a couple of months as we moved on to flash soon after. I kept coming back to Scratch to make stuff as it was easier and saved a whole lot of time. Now more than three years on I like to visit the site everyday and see what's happening.

Re: 5 Years: My Scratch Story

A couple years ago I asked my dad if I could program something(He had just made a program in C++ I believe). So after a couple weeks of research he told me about scratch. I was totally intrigued. I never put much effort into my projects. I was learning even though I didn't know it. After a few weeks I thought I was amazing at programming and tried C++, it took me a week to make a calculator. I basically gave up on programming for about six months. I came back and worked a while putting a little more effort into my programs. Then I made this project, that was my turning point. I started really programming. So then I tried to learn as much as I could from scratch. Soon afterwards I experimented with other programming languages. I'm now like never on the main site. I come on the forums.

5 years....nice! I've been here 4 years, 2 months. I still can't believe that Scratch now has 2 million+ projects and 1 million+ users when neither had even hit 100k when I first came here! Those's were the golden ages of Scratch, where most projects were actually games (and not pass-it-ons and poor animations). :_)

If I hadn't found Scratch, I wouldn't have ever bothered to learn to program, and would have probably turned into trash-spewing COD player.  This place was amazing (and still is, if not as much so), and I hope it lasts for years more, and I am here the whole time.  smile

Ah yes, but you should have been there in '07. It was amazing. I was within the first 13,000 users, so the community was small and close. It was really fun.

I was almost an "07er". I made my account in early February '08. It was still really fun, and I was probably in the first 50k users. And on the same day I made my account, I made and uploaded my first (and very simple) project, Cat to Milk. Even though it was a very bad project, people enjoyed it alot. Back then, people were very nice and helpful. If only it was like that now.....  smile

Wow, this is a really cool story!

I might make one of these someday, but I feel like there are plenty other things to be added to my story, so maybe not for a while.  smile

Re: 5 Years: My Scratch Story

I found Scratch after a Google search, after thinking Game Maker was too complicated even in it's drag'n'drop mode.  tongue  I think I registered an account somewhere in early '08, with which I downloaded a few projects and made a lame one which I named "Play with a Cat" (just a bunch of "when [key] pressed" scripts which made the Scratch cat do stuff).

All tries to find my account or the project have failed, UNTIL JUST NOW. That was random.  lol  Apparently, it was uploaded in January '08.

I then forgot completely about Scratch until October '08, when I decided to try it out again with another account (with my then new username, technoguyx). This time I actually figured out how to use it decently in some months, and after about a year passed I started getting my slice of the front page (ridden by hamsters and warrior cats at the time, I remember many people were upset about it.) with projects such as Ball Shooter (not sure, I think it got Top Viewed once) and Random Project Idea Generator (Featured).

My biggest fail on Scratch? Scratch Sim.  hmm  I think I advertised it too much without even having it done. I made a project which people could remix to get their ads into the final project, and so many people remixed, it eventually got into the Top Remixed section (which was ridden by coloring contests and "add yourself" at the ti- Oh wait, it's still like that.  lol  ). But eventually I cancelled the project since I couldn't be bothered to complete it, and I actually had some trouble programming parts of it. I'm considering reviving this project as a collab sometime. Maybe when 2.0 comes out.

2010 now. Featured for the second time, made some more projects, and then came my "dark ages". Didn't post anything in about a year. I eventually came back with the Scratch Level Calculator, which was posted somewhere in 2011 and curated by Jwosty. It also inspired many people to make their own quizzes.  big_smile

And now, I'm not really making projects either. My main project, currently, is the first working (...sort of) Scratch band, Frozen Coco. Some of you may have heard of it.  wink

So prove it on your old one.
It's not "impossable". If you look at the user join date, it's 2007.

Fine, I will.

There, proven.

I found the forums 2 years after I joined.

I uploaded my first project three years after I joined, I think.

Ahh yes, the dark ages of hamsters and warrior cats filling up the front page. It was funny because just before that period of time so many good projects from guys like archmage and S65 were starting to get front paged, and it immediately stopped because of hamsters and cats  tongue

Pretty sure I never visited the forums with that "Basty" account until now. Still shows my join year as '07.
