5 Years: My Scratch Story

5 years ago(in April, 2007), my dad was using the computer when I came into my room. I remember seeing a cat and some blocks, and a green flag. He put some motion blocks together and double clicked the script, and it made the cat move. I was so amazed that it was that easy to make animations like that. So I started playing around with the program. I opened up sample projects, tried making games, and learned some basic scripts.

After about a month, I was obsessed with Scratch. I was making different animations and basic games. I was so happy that I could make projects that would usually be hard to make by just snapping blocks together.

Two more months passed and I was using Scratch all the time. I started exploring more features of Scratch when I saw a "share" button. I learned that there was a website for Scratch and immediately I made an account. I chose one of my projects( a very simple one) and uploaded it, and it actually got views. I was really happy. Then, I saw a little tab on the navigation bar that said "forums".

I clicked it and saw the FluxBB forum and I started exploring. After a few weeks, I had become a known member of the community by uploading different projects and posting on the forums. Scratch was opening me up to a world of fun.

Fast forward a year. I have uploaded several(not all being good, but nonetheless) projects and have become well known on the forums. I learned that on the forums, I could not only learn about Scratch, but it also taught me a lot about programming. I had learned how to make a website, both on Freewebs and programming it in HTML and CSS. I had also learned about different programming languages, like Python.

Again we move forward a year, and now I am working with JSO on a resource website called "Scratch Resources, which, to this day, is a popular resource sharing website. I have learned more about different programming languages, and my knowledge of Scratch programming has grown. I had become very well known throughout the community and had made some new friends.

Another 2 years pass and I have had a lot of fun with Scratch. I have had 2 very successful collaborations(CatBOT 1.0 and 2.0), and have gained so much knowledge from Scratch. Because of the Scratch community, I was introduced to things like Minecraft, and I've just had a great time learning basic programming skills.

Fast forward to now. 5 entire years since I was first introduced to Scratch. I have learned so much about programming, from making animations and games to websites and Java programs. I have met a ton of cool people, and I've collaborated with many as well. Because of Scratch, I have learned a lot, and had a lot of fun. It's amazing to think how much Scratch has changed my life these past five years.

-----------------------------------

P.S. - Moderators, I put this in "Things I'm Making and Creating" because it's sort of a short story, move/delete if you need to.

I'm glad to think that the community will always be kind and helpful, the language will always be a fun and easy way to be introduced into programming, the motto will always be: Imagine, Program, Share - Nomolos

Re: 5 Years: My Scratch Story

Nice. ^^ I couldn't agree more that it prepares you for more advanced programming languages more than anything else.

Hopefully I'll still be here in five years' time :3

You should have seen the forums back then, it was amazing. The community was really small so pretty much every topic got a lot of replies.

Also, approved the script  wink

Re: 5 Years: My Scratch Story

I only joined like a few weeks ago.
Wicki kept rambling on about it and I went on the forums because she said she had uploaded our collab story on there.
I saw people talking about it and I wanted to say something so I made an account. It was more of an on-the-whim thing.

I only go on Scratch for the forums though. I am not a programmer and I cannot understand HTMl haha.

Re: 5 Years: My Scratch Story

5 years....nice! I've been here 4 years, 2 months. I still can't believe that Scratch now has 2 million+ projects and 1 million+ users when neither had even hit 100k when I first came here! Those's were the golden ages of Scratch, where most projects were actually games (and not pass-it-ons and poor animations). :_)

If I hadn't found Scratch, I wouldn't have ever bothered to learn to program, and would have probably turned into trash-spewing COD player.  This place was amazing (and still is, if not as much so), and I hope it lasts for years more, and I am here the whole time.  smile

Ah yes, but you should have been there in '07. It was amazing. I was within the first 13,000 users, so the community was small and close. It was really fun.

Re: 5 Years: My Scratch Story

I've been here since sometime '08. My school did a unit on scratch. I must say though that at first I didn't like it. I can't show you my first project because I got my account deleted because everything I did on it was embarrassing and I didn't want to waste space on the servers. After that account I started to actually program, learn how to use variables, etc. I've participated in Team Earth and am in Team Elite (same thing).

Pikavee. My posts are still on the forums. So are my comments. But my projects and userpage are gone.
