The Problem With .GIFs...

Aexis here, once again asking you forum regulars and scratch masters a more-than-likely simple question ("No question is too basic!"... Really?).

And here it is:

I am trying to use one of those cool animated .GIF files to replace my current "My Profile" image. However, the .GIF I want to use is too large, according to the site. I would like to know if there is any way to make the .GIF file smaller.

To clarify, the file is already .GIF format. Oh, yes, and the .GIF is a picture of a tesseract performing double rotation. (I wonder why the system can't handle it...)

I'd be obliged if you'd reply; either way (yes, of course you can; no, it's physically impossible) is fine.

Re: The Problem With .GIFs...

well the answer is yes, it just cud take a few hours or a few minutes.

how big is the image? (for eg. 480x360 - pixels) - becuase it does not need to be any bigger then about 100x100 or 50x50 - so if it is bigger then that, go here and upload the pic and use the tools to rezise it to around 100x100:

http://www.gifworks.com/cgi-bin/gifworks.pl?com=transfer_open

if it is already this small (unlikely) then you will ned to change the quality and ammount of colours sued in each frame of the gif.

hope this helps, dibbo.

Re: The Problem With .GIFs...

I hate to be fatalistic, but GIFWorks only accepts files up to a limit of 400 KB (that's kilobytes) filesize.

This is a problem because the smallest file I have of what I mentioned above is 491 KB.

I will try to find another .GIF of smaller filesize, and thanks, Dibbo, but until then I still need help and this post is still open.

Axeis you could aslo try getting the gfx in the animated GIF and try making the same thing in flash fireworks but try reducing the no. of frames and the canvas size.
Hope this helps.

Re: The Problem With .GIFs...

You have to use your default paint editor to resize it, I think. Either do that or use Gimp, because Gimp can handle layers (which is what .gif files have to animate) and also you can save the file as any format, instead of just .gif. But I think Scratch can only handle .gifs for animations in your profile.  smile
