Elite, released in 1984 for the BBC Micro and eventually on computers and consoles ranging from the NES to the Archimedes, was the first 3D home game. It had wireframe graphics with hidden line removal, combined with the relatively empty and geometric environment of space, to allow the game to run on the hardware.
The game is also the first space trading sim and an early example of a sandbox adventure. You explore 8 procedural galaxies of 256 systems each, trading commodities, upgrading and arming your ship, mining asteroids, fighting pirates and, if you wish, becoming a space pirate yourself.
It is an extremely complex game for its time, and as such, may be difficult to recreate in scratch. Would this be realistically possible to make?

3D is not simple in Scratch. So a 3D version might not be possible. But a 2D one might be.

That method will not work. Elite requires true 3D, with objects moving and interacting in 3D.

True, although I'm sure it could be done "behind the scenes" using lots of variables! The challenge in Scratch is generally the rendering part on screen.
