Scratch 1.4 Source code now available under the GPL v2

The Scratch 1.4 source is now available under the Gnu General Public License v2!  This newly re-licensed code is basically the same as the old code that's been available for a long time under the Scratch Source Code License, so don't expect to find any changes. We mainly released this version under the GPL so that free software distros - like Debian, Fedora, and Ubuntu - could make Scratch easily available to their users.

You can visit this page for more info:
http://info.scratch.mit.edu/Source_Code

If you want to make a mod / remix of Scratch, you might be better off starting from the already released "Scratch Source Code Licensed" code.  You could use the GPL code if you want - you just have to make sure you change the name of your remix from Scratch, remove the Scratch Cat and Gobo, and disable uploading to the Scratch website. See the source code page linked above for more info.

Scratch On!

smile   It basically means that Scratch will be easier to install and run on Ubuntu and other Linuxes.

But also: Free software is awesome! Scratch couldn't exist without other free software, like Apache - our webserver - which is free, and memcached, and varnish, and mysql, and of course :Squeak!  Without all this awesome free software, created by people who value free software and sharing all their work, Scratch as we know it would not be possible.

So, yeah - Free (as in free speech) software is awesome.  smile  And now Scratch is free in the way that a lot of free software people like and think is important. ok, nuff said.

Cool.

Does this mean existing scratch mods will have to make changes to how they work? (BYOB has a modified gobo in it)

Me too.  smile
There are still some kinks to work out, because Scratch needs to be packaged to depend on the Squeak vm in the repositories, and there are a couple incompatibilities at the moment.  But I think the license was the major roadblock, and now that that's resolved, once the bugs get worked out it could be in the software center in a matter of weeks.

Ask me what I'm doing, wait an hour than roll a die, if it's 4-6, I'm playing Skyrim, if it's 1, I'm eating, if it's 2-3 I'm programming.
