New Forum Category--Academics

I think we should make another category beneath Interests beyond Scratch called Academics, for the discussion of school-, college-, and education-related topics, as well as topics related to academic subjects (i.e. Economics, Ancient Egypt, Calculus).  These types of topics inspire many Scratch projects, and Scratch is meant to be educational.  However, these topics don't seem to really fit into any of the current categories.  Adding an Academics section would further organize the new Interests beyond Scratch forums while adding more worthwhile material to the Scratch forums.

Implementation of this idea should be extremely easy, so that isn't a concern.  What do you think?

Re: New Forum Category--Academics

Cuz there's nothing I want to discuss more than school after a long hard day at priso- er...school.  wink  One of the reasons I log on to the Forums is to FORGET school. I'm sure others can vouch for me.

But there's one main reason I don't support. People will see the word "school" and it will automatically turn into another Misc with people talking about how much they hate school, or who picked on who. Blah blah blah, drama drama drama.  neutral

Thats why they got rid of it.

No, they had Misc.

Then it turned into "Oh, I have_______ disease" and "A jerk beat me up at school today" or "I hate all my teachers" and other such topics.

That WASN'T my point. My point was, new scratchers (or inexperienced ones) will see the word and think it means "talk about school".

Then it's pretty easy to say in the little description "Not for talk about social issues."

BTW, thanks to all the above supporters!   big_smile

It should say something like this:
Academics
Discuss new things you are learning, classes you're taking, or experiments you've done. NOT for talking about social issues.

Goodbye, Scratch. I am leaving because of the exams coming up at our school, though I'll check the forums once or twice a week.

Re: New Forum Category--Academics

When Miscellaneous was replaced, there was concern of too many subdivisions would cause the forums to look more cluttered, so the idea was to stick with more generalized topics.

That being said: most academic topics usually fit fairly well under the RaP forum since they usually involve some element of reading and observation. It does, however, require some intuition about what is okay to talk about in here and which are probably better discussed elsewhere or put into a Scratch project (case in point: some schools and colleges offer courses in political science and sociology, which often brings about topics which are probably better off talking about in a debate forum.  hmm )

@coolhogs: The Educators forum actually was designed for teachers and educators who needed a place to talk about incorporating Scratch into the academic world. That has moved over to a new website called ScratchED.  smile

Science fair: MaC.
Algebra: RaP.
Art projects: MaC.
US History: RaP.

And so on...

Having an Academics forum brings about more organization, and encourages academic discussion, which is (almost) always a good thing.   smile

Not sure I support this as it is.

However, you can always make a forum outside of Scratch for it.  wink
