I THINK I KNOW ---- I use Windows 7, and I've found that only CERTAIN fonts make Scratch glitch. When I use something simple/generic like Arial or Times New Roman, nothing glitchy comes up. But when I used more unique fonts like Sergoe Script, Scratch became little more than a graphic --- it wouldn't let me click so much as the exit button, much less the save button. So, I stick with Arial font and I'm good.

It happened 6 times in a row a few days ago.
I had the internet open at the same time with quite a few tabs open whilst playing an online game.
I tried to type something into one of my sprites EVERY time when the bug strikes. The same sprite. My game has allot of scripts and allot of sprites.

I tried to share a project. It took a while. Suddenly, everything went cabam! You know what I mean. I hit the invisible file and share buttons. The notes were invisible. So was everything else. I finally got it shared. This is it. I think it might have something to do with a lot of information to process. Mine had a lot of pictures. Other people seem to have it happen with a lot of scripts.

It happens on my Level Game when I'm working on new levels.
It first happened when I was typing at the win screen.
I have no other windows open.
Now it happens whenever the word CONGRATULATIONS is used on that background if it is edited, it happens when I save, it happens when I press enter 5-10 times in a row.
I have Windows 7.
There are 300-400+ sprites and right now it is about 10.5 MB.
There are many sounds.
There are about 1000 scripts!

all you have to do is save your progect now and then then if it happens all you have to do is close the that window and open it back up then load back up your game
Actually, when you re-open it, the text is still gone and you have to save again two or three times.

Well... I don't know if this helps, but here's how it happened to me:
I was making a sprite that was supposed to give lots of info, meaning that there were four costumes. All of them were basically rectangles with text. I was editing the fourth (last) costume when it came. Most things disappeared. The things that didn't disappear when away when I put the mouse on them.

I was making a game called "ghost boy" and typing some as commentary. when I was almost done, the glitch appeared.
Another time when I published a game the glitch appeared.
Those are the only 2 encounters of this glitch I have had
I think it only appears on windows 7 (that's what I'm using and It never appears on the mac I use)

That's not true--it happens irrespective of your OS. Perhaps your Mac has more RAM?

My story:
I was making my don't fall offgame. I finished, and tried to upload it. Text dissapears. Upload freezes. Opened a new scratch window, opened the game, everything was fixed. Uploaded. Upload went fine. Unfortunately, almost no-one sees my game.

It happened right when I used the "stamp" button, and when I pressed the "T" (Text) button to edit my already typed sentence.
I was adding to my project "How to draw a mermaid"
2 scripts:
[scratchblocks]
when gf clicked
switch to background [background 1 v]
[scratchblocks]
when [space v] key pressed
next backround
31 backgrounds (so far)
No sprites
The only font colors I used were black and purple
Font was Helvetica Bold
Size was 24
No music
No sounds
Had 4 Mozilla Firefox windows open
Had 4 Windows Internet explorer 9 windows open
Skype home page was open
Skype chat was open
1 folder open
Internet was working fine
My phone and and DSi have internet open
Screen shots: http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/baileyburrito/2647757
Now it happened again when I was putting a comment
Happened again while I was commenting 7 3 2012

Incorrect - it does NOT happen irrespective of one's Operating System. If you look at all of the reports, not one affected project was created and then glitched on a Macintosh or Linux computer.

I have a project that triggered the disappearing text bug. I whittled it down, and with one costume of one sprite with no code and no variables, it happens. The sprite consists of 7 lines of text, and if I draw for a minute or two, the text disappears. Drawing just random squares, it may happen anywhere from the 30th to the 100th draw, but it always happens. Working in Windows XP home, SP3. No change in behavior running in safe mode. When it does happen, in addition to vanishing text, the mouse focus often, not always changes, so I have to click beneath a button.
It reminds me of a bug I wrote into a program that didn't close the device contexts that it opened. Weird things happen after the 32nd opening.
Hope this helps

Maybe it is because there are certain types of Scratch for different OS.

I have a windows vista ultimate, and it happened. I had about 20 variables, one list and 7 sprites. I was currently exiting the paint editor.

Second post on the same project with the disappearing text bug.
I uploaded the project and get the same behavior on a different windows XP machine.

The theory of too many device contexts doesn't hold up. That should be more predictable.
With windows Task Manager open, you can see that every edit to the text box reduces system memory. This doesn't happen with projects that keep their text. You can watch the memory being chewed up as you simply move the eraser around an already empty portion of screen.

Well, i was making my character bios, when i started eraseing some text, then my title dissappeared... then i went to backrounds, my text dissapeared in thoses to! HEEEEEELP!

Yes, there are different types of Scratch for Macintosh and Linux based computers. If you import a Macintosh/Linux made project into a Windows version of Scratch, then the Linux/Macintosh text (which has a different font) will be present. This bug is located in UnicodePlugin.dll - which, being a dll file, is not present on Macintosh/Linux Versions of Scratch - hence how bugged computers are never Linux or Macintosh.

Right when I uploaded this it happened. It caused scratch to lock up and all.
I was typing in the large text costumes under "summaries" here and it glitched.
It also happened here. I think I was importing a costume, but I'm not sure.
Also, I only use Arial, Arial rounded, Arial black, and the other simple fonts, etc.

It's a bug in the Windows server, and not in Scratch.
