they should just have a warning or something in the notes

That wouldn't work.

Firstly, most people don't even GLANCE at the project notes, and secondly, even if they do, what's to stop them viewing it?

If a parent saw a project with inappropriate language in, they may not allow their child to join.

Re: Inappropriate Songs

There should be a little "DO NOT POST INAPPROPRIATE SONGS" thing below the project notes box when you first upload a projects, so, if people were about to post a project with an inappropriate song, they'd get a little warning, and change the music.

Maybe projects with certain words in the title/project notes should automatically have to go through moderation before being viewable. It seems this is already happening with comments, as one of the things I commented was automatically deleted. (I have no idea why)

By the way, there's a lot of music out there that's way more awesome than rap and stuff.

That is opinion, you can't ban some songs because there's "better songs" than them. Some people like rap, they can get a censored version, why does anyone say "heck" or "crud" when that's a replacement for more "serious" swears? Some people LIKE that sort of music, I like '90s gangsta rap from Eazy-E, if I wanted to make a gangsta game I would use a censored version as there's not many other genres as gangsta as gangsta rap. Just because in your opinion, you don't like the music doesn't mean even the censored version should be banned, or we'll end up with lots of people fighting over what music is the best for Scratch.

Do you mean just swear words, or like, worse stuff? because I don't think it is that bad if it's just swear words.

Re: Inappropriate Songs

I don't see the problem.

Kids listen to this stuff ALL THE TIME, and still don't notice.
They aren't going to repeat bad words or anything, so why should it matter?

Besides, most kids here are above the age of 7, and there are rarely anyone below 5, although it could happen.

I think you are just overreacting, ALL songs are bad when you truley think about it (except, of course, those stupid 'Barney' songs and such.)

People swear ALL over projects, and nobody ever flags, so why should we start flagging darn SONGS?

This really got me mad, sorry.  tongue
Also, sorry for posting on something that's kinda old. xD

So, just because swearing is becoming a major part of our culture, we should give up and just allow more things on Scratch that would encourage bad habits even more?

Re: Inappropriate Songs

It's okay if you use the instrumental versions of the song, right?

As long as there are no bad words (and how would there be, it's instrumental).

We do, but sometimes it's hard to find things like this: for example, it's possible some of the inappropriate bad songs uploaded have a clean version of the lyrics or are edited so only a small clip of it is used. Mods often have to listen through the whole song to make sure it's okay for the site, and that can be time consuming when considering that there are other projects to monitor and other projects to take care of.

For the most part, for anyone who encounters a project with questionable music, then it should be flagged with a short clear explanation of what is objectionable in the project.

I think it's because they feel like they're not really sure if it's inappropriate enough to be removed. It's like when kids are being bullied and they're afraid to tell an adult because they don't want to tattle. It's understandable.

Also, a song doesn't necessarily have to have swearing to be inappropriate. Some songs just have a bad... style. I'm not sure how to put it. Of course, there's also songs that are written in a sort "coded" language, and although they don't have bad words, they mean something inappropriate.

Censored and 'coded' songs would only be flagged if it is bad for the younger users to hear, but if it doesn't say anything explicitly, then they wouldn't understand it anyway. And about the style, you can't really flag a project because the music doesn't suit your taste. But if you see a song with inappropriate language it in, then you should report it.

But what if a younger user has an older sibling? There are some other reasons why younger users would know what it means.  And besides, if they didn't now what it meant then they might search it online and hear the original song and If they didn't know what swear words meant they wouldn't know they were bad and I don't think their parents would be to happy if they went around saying them.

Unfortunately, that's easier said than done. There's a lot of false positives with the current censor system, and there are also a lot of cases where words from one language can be seen as swear words in another language. (Not to mention the number of project the site gets everyday that such a system might put a heavy tax on the server, let alone moderation staff). So it's not exactly a practical system considering what we have to work with.

Just flag the projects with inappropriate lyrics, that's really the easy fix to this problem in consideration to the moderation system that is in place.

This.

Then someone else would? This goes for now too, if someone doesn't know that a word's bad and don't flag it then someone who does know it's bad will.
