Moderating age

I think you should change the age that they have to be to become a moderator. just becuase people are young doesnt mean theyre not responsable. And, teens some times arent responsible  wink  . Whos with me?!

Re: Moderating age

Do not support. Moderators may have to look at or find inappropriate images that are not suitable for people under the age limit (not saying that it's fine for the moderators to look at, it's still inappropriate). This has already been settled in a different topic

Re: Moderating age

Also, being a moderator isn't about responsibility, being a "scratcher" is about responsibility. Being a scratcher you are responsible for making sure that the mods don't have to work that much.

Re: Moderating age

Hey! I definitely agree with you that some younger Scratchers are responsible enough and some could probably qualify. However, they would be breaking a U.S. law by allowing children under the age of thirteen to have that responsibility and have the risk of seeing something that may not be suitable for their age. It was a law passed called "COPPA" a while back.

So, while it may be a bit of a pain for young Scratchers, it's not worth the risk and it doesn't seem to be that much of a problem.

Re: Moderating age

I can't really think of anyone in specific I'd really like to be a moderator that's under the age, and as Steve said there are legal issues. I also don't see what's wrong with getting a few more years of experience.  wink

Re: Moderating age

Sorry to all younger people, but I don't really want a 7 year old controlling what I do on Scratch.

Well they wouldn't remove the age limit completely, they'd just reduce it.

Anyway, I don't support. If you were an eleven year old, would you like to be handed the responsibility of dealing with troll posts, which may contain *bad* images?

Id be okay with it. I make jokes that NOBODY in my grade understands but seventh graders do  hmm

That's not the point though; the point is, it's just not fair to hand an eleven year old the responsibility of keeping the forums free from trolling and whatnot, and I'm pretty sure it'd also be illegal, when you think about some of the things moderators have to do, such as clean up pornography.

Cheddar made a post ages ago about this, I'll see if I can find it.

Quoting this to remind everyone that no-matter how cool it might be, it would still be violating a law, which the Scratch Team isn't going to do.

Do you mean "adult" jokes?  Just because you can do something doesn't necessarily mean you should.

Re: Moderating age

No, 13/14 is a good age for a moderator applicant. As it has already been stated, in general, people that are aged 14+ generally act more maturely about a subject that someone younger than that. I'm sure that there are some people younger than 14 that are more mature than people older than 14, but in general people older than 14 are more mature than people younger than 14. I hope this helps.

P.S Right, it's about time this should be closed.

Re: Moderating age

One of the main reasons why the age limit is in place is that the Scratch Team is largely uncomfortable with younger users handling some of the things that moderators are likely to face in their duties regardless of how responsible they might be in handling it. It's similar to how some parents are uncomfortable with their children being exposed to certain things even if they [the kids] are responsible enough to deal with such matters. So the lowering the age limit for Community Moderators is something that's unlikely to happen.

Besides, just because you're not a Community Moderator doesn't mean you can't help moderate. You still have to tools to flag projects and comments. And that's more than enough involvement in the community to help keep content on the site clean  wink
