Making my own PC, need a bit of help!

Okay, so I am soon going to build a new PC with parts I ordered from Amazon. But I was too stupid to check if they would fit with the motherboard and also I don't know if they will so, I will post my specs here and you guys can tell me if I am missing anything or if 't something just wont fit with mother board.

Specs
Coolmaster Cosmos II Case
Coolmaster Hyper 612 PWM
Corsair Vengeance 32GB Quad-Channel DDR3 Memory Kit
Corsair Professional Series Gold 1200 Power Supply Unit
Corsair CPU Cooling Hydro Series Water Cooling CPU Cooler H80
Geforce GTX 580
Intel Core i7 Processor Extreme Edition 980X – i7-980X
WD Caviar Black
Samsung Blu-Ray Optical Drive
PCI Sound CARD
Visontek Killer Xeno Pro
WD Caviar Green Backup Storage
Memory Card Reader
Asus ROG Rampage IV Formula

Also do you guys thing I should add in a couple more fans and maybe another graphics card?

EDIT: ROG Server not working right now, will post a link to it later.

Re: Making my own PC, need a bit of help!

Did you make it a personal goal to spend as much money as possible or something? O_o

I would say ditch the 980X and buy a 2600k instead. They're pretty much equal performers and you'll save a ton of money. Unless you're doing extremely demanding threaded apps all the time and you seriously need it for productivity, the 980X is not worth the extra price over the 2600k. Use that money to buy another GTX 580 and SLI those puppies. You could even get yourself a nice SSD, which I highly recommend. Use it as a boot drive and for important programs, then use your hard drive as a slave drive for most programs and files.

Also, I don't know what operating system you're planning on getting, but I assume that you'll be using Windows 7 Home Premium x64. And, well, that only supports 16GB of RAM. Just a heads-up.

Oh yeah, and to answer your actual question, no, that motherboard won't work with that parts list. The socket for the CPU is wrong.

Re: Making my own PC, need a bit of help!

No, the 980X won't fit on that (awesome, btw) motherboard. The 980X uses the LGA1366 socket, the Rampage IV mobo uses LGA2011. You should go with the 2600K (which DOES use the LGA2011, and will save you alot of money in the process, and probably still get more performance). If you really need the highest-end CPU, go for the 3xxxX series, which is basically the 9xxX series of the 2nd generation "Sandy Bridge" Intel CPUs.

Also, I would ditch the network card, the mobo you are planning to get has just as good networking.

Other than that, everything looks good. You're gonna have a screaming gaming PC on your hands.  smile

Ok so switching to 2600k and SLIing tem 580, but I don't really know which SSD to get. BTW: I am just building the ultimate PC possible with my current savings.  wink

Yep, Ultimate will be fine then.

And I would guess he plans on gaming, which isn't viable on Linux just yet.

Your SSD options depend on how much you want to spend (although that doesn't seem to be an issue for you.  tongue ) You may want to check out Anandtech's SSD benchmarks and Tom's Hardware's latest SSD Price/performance article, but keep in mind that prices change, so you're best doing comparisons yourself. (Keep reliability in mind, too)

For a starting point, you might want to look into Intel's 520 Series, the Crucial m4 or Samsung's 830 series. The links I've included are to the 128GB versions of those drives; you might of course decide you want more or less space.

Aren't you a mod? Can't you close that quitting topic right under this one?

Anyway, get a GTS from Zotac, really good and 2 slots.

The GTS series aren't exactly high performance parts... they're decent performers in the low end, sure, but that's not what we're looking for. Besides, AFAIK Zotac isn't necessarily a bad make, but there are much better Nvidia OEMS such as EVGA and XFX.

Zotac is a branch of Nvidia from what I can remember.

And they're pretty good, you don't really notice any lag if you have decent RAM.

Re: Making my own PC, need a bit of help!

A branch of Nvidia? No, not as far as I can find. They're just a China-based company that makes motherboards, graphics cards, and small, low-power PC's.  hmm

And I guess I just don't see what the GTS 450 (which I assume is the card you refer to) has to do with this. It's a budget card, and this most certainly is not a budget rig.  tongue

It says Nvidia Zotac GTA 450, so I'm guessing that they've collaborated or it's another branch.

Re: Making my own PC, need a bit of help!

Oh, that's why you thought that. XD No, that's just the model in the GPU business. Companies, primarily Nvidia and AMD, design the cards, and then manufacturers like Zotac, Sapphire, and EVGA produce and sell graphics cards based on their reference board.

You can think of it sort of like PC manufacturers: they take parts made by other companies, assemble them into a computer while adding their own customization, then stick their branding on it and sell it to consumers.

Re: Making my own PC, need a bit of help!

Wow, I can't even be bothered with computers anymore.

Just got told I need to spend £800 to upgrade my processor because I'd need to get a new motherboard (which means I need to buy more RAM to fit it) and to upgrade my motherboard I need a new case. My processor is the worst part of my computer, so I'm eager to update it.

Well, even though I have considered getting a new PC like that, none of the ones that I have checked seem to be capable of what I have planned. Currently I use an Alienware M14x laptop and that is better then most PC's I have seen, It runs Skyrim, Portal and Fraps with out any lag. But even this is not powerful enough to handle large scale programming and 3-D Rendering.

mobo = motherboard  tongue

The motherboard has built in networking, and looks like it is even optimized for gaming, making an separate network card kinda useless.

@Liru: Unless your computer is really old, you shouldn't have to buy a new motherboard to upgrade the CPU. What CPU is in your computer right now? Maybe I could find a faster one that will fit the same socket.

Look for any AMD CPUs that use Socket AM2+. Those will work in your motherboard, as long as your power supply can handle it. Also, stay away from the budget Sempron models.
