Well, I think that disabling the img tags is a horrible idea. Everybody uses them, so why disable them. If you take a look at the topic "Your Local Block Library" all you can see is a bunch of words and links.

And, yes, I know someone misused the img tag, but you should just tell them to stop and if they don't... well ban them from the forums.

If you agree with this post, reply to it saying "+1". That will get Paddle2See's attention.

Lol - No need...I'm familiar with that argument.  We are still looking at ways to implement img tags but in a safer way.

I am not sure if this is posable, but how bout when someone uses the img tag, a link is sent directly to a forum in which only Scratch Team members can see. So that way, to see if something is inappropriate, you just go into that forum and see what people have been posting.

still doesn't help much; the image tags were misused whilst there were no mods online...

Oh, I have an idea. How bout whenever someone uploads something, it also goes to a mods/Scratch Team email.

I really want to know something.

What is so bad about getting more mods? It seems that you put in all these measures to decrease stress on moderators and lower the quality of the forums when you could just get a few more mods (maybe stop getting American ones and start covering more hours?).

Actually not all the mods are from the US. coolstuff is from Canada, JSO is from Belgium, MyRedNeptune is from Russia. Retired moderator Wolfie1996 was from the UK.

It isn't the issue about getting more mods, it's the issue about having mods to focus more on Scratch-related things like Scratch Design Studio, or helping to monitor projects on the main site. If the Community Moderators are focused more on merely the forum users, then they're not really helping out the entire community. It doesn't make sense to spend moderator resources if the goal is to get these mod resources to largely cover the forums. If more mods are needed, then it really should be out of a need for main site issues.

I suppose forum quality is a matter of perspective? I've seen some sites that don't make use of images or lack some other forum amenities (such as links) but yet they're still fairly well-structure, have a main subject theme and are active; likewise I've seen forums having everything like images, link, etc. where I don't feel they're of great quality. It all depends on the user using it.

Re: Image tags disabled

What moderator resources? They're not paid.

And I mean spread out with the timezones, I can map out the hours when not a single mod will be on. And I've seen many sites get moderators for forums and some for all areas of the site, mods are free so there's no reason not to have a few of them.

Liru wrote:

You're right, they're not paid. So that means they can't be treated like workmules and put effort into mostly forum duties when they volunteered to becomes moderators and their drive to volunteer as a moderator is due to Scratch.

And I mean spread out with the timezones, I can map out the hours when not a single mod will be on. And I've seen many sites get moderators for forums and some for all areas of the site, mods are free so there's no reason not to have a few of them.

Whether or not a site has specific staff designated to do different things largely depends on the site itself: the role of various part on the site, how large the community is, and perhaps most importantly, the goal of the site in mind. Most well-established websites that have a diverse moderation staff are large, and they may have different interest and goals in mind when they made the decision to divide staff roles to different areas of the site. Although I can only guess about it, I'd imagine that a website like, say, 4Kids, has a separate moderation staff for the forums because driving more users to the site and catering to those users so they're more likely to stay falls as part of the goal of being a commercial enterprise.

Currently, while the Scratch forums are a part of the website, they're only a small part of the website - Scratch in it's entirety is something much bigger. It's not a good interest to have moderators as merely forum-oriented, that sends a message that the forums are more important if more and more moderators are needed to maintain it; this message becomes negative if the role is for something that doesn't fit the site's goals (one of the main reasons why Miscellaneous ended up being removed in the end and replaced with two different forums).

Volunteers doesn't mean that a lot of moderators are available to help out. It's kind of like how there are volunteer firefighters - just because they put out fires for free doesn't mean everyone is qualified to be a volunteer firefighter.  hmm

But we're getting off-topic: I thought this topic was about image tags being disabled? There is something in the works to add a measure of protection against bad images, though not quite finalized just yet.

Probably becuase not enough of them are very relyable or maybe the scratch team just wants to wait to get a few more new people in before the next mod vote  big_smile

If this is implimented, I'm not gonna want to be a mod anymore  tongue
I think a better solution would be to have mods from different time zones. That might help with the no-mods-are-online-when-someone-decides-to-troll problem.

I honestly think people are overeacting about the removal of Misc and img tags.

As long as they don't get rid of RiP and MaC, I'll be fine.

I did. But it's also nice for scratchers to see the post and think about until a moderator gets online.

Okay.

I've thought about it and I don't agree, because it still is relevant and although slightly offtopic, it will be useful in the future when they're re-enabled as well as for any further discussion of solutions.

When they are reenabled they can open it back up, and suggestions on how to fix it can be posted in the suggestions forum.

We're actively working on a fix...so the topic is still relevant.  I think we'll keep it open, thanks anyway.  Let's try to keep it ontopic though.
