Music help

I'm really sorry if this is in the wrong place,but I want to make my own soundracks for my project.
Barring Scratch's sound application(which becomes very tall and glitchy quickly) could anyone tell me where to find a piece of (preferably free) software that could help me do this?

You could use finale notepad 2012.

When I make my own music, which isn't very often, I make it IN Scratch (for simple tunes for test runs), or I edit things in Audacity.
