Blue or clear box to left of thread
What is that box for to the left of a thread and topics. What does it mean when it's blue?

The box shows whether or not there are any new posts in the topic next to it. When it's blue, it means there has been at least one new post since the last time you were on, and if it's gray, there aren't any.
