Uhh... Windows is definitely a lot more open and about as commercial as OS X. On Windows you can kind of choose what devices you use it on and how to use it; OS X is only for certain machines. And the OS in itself isn't creative. It's the person, not even the software. And OS X doesn't have MS Paint, the holy god of all things.

And yes, but just because it's customary doesn't mean it's totally correct.

Also, there's nothing wrong with the way Windows is set up. Registry-based isn't even bad... it's a lot cleaner than the way *nix systems do it with files inside /etc, which is similar to what Windows used to do. OS X also scatters property list files which in effect do the same thing. So that's not even a valid argument.  tongue

Oh and you're doing the silly thing that anyone who argues with me about operating systems does: comparing an OS (Windows) with a company (Apple)  wink

Uh ok.

Wrong. There has been a lot of media criticism on how closed the iOS platform is, but the OSX system is very open.

MS Paint is the worst program ever made. Limiting which machines OSX can be installed on keeps it cool. Hackintosh for those who do not want to use a Apple computer.

Who cares.

OS X is not very open. Sure, it's possible to get into certain files, but they make it pretty difficult (as in any sort of file that begins with . which makes it difficult to access .htaccess files for web programming [and is one reason why nobody uses OS X for servers]). It is possible to add any program though.

MS Paint is an excellent piece of software. Do you have any rationale for why you hate it? I see that OS X doesn't come with any sort of drawing program preinstalled, especially not a good pixel art editor.

How does that "keep it cool"? It just makes it more proprietary and closed. You have to break your agreement with Apple to put it on another system.

Please stop being off-topic.
Anyway, I know a bit of HTML, but not enough to make a website.

It is very open. In fact since it is unix based, it makes opening web servers on it really easy and straightforward.

Files starting with . are hidden by default on all Unix systems.

MS Paint = ugly antialiasing + disgusting colours + depressing window layout.

Ugly antialiasing being the main reason for hating.

If you must use Windows for painting get Paint.NET at least, if not Gimp.

Keeps it limited to people who are cool, and keeps it away from geeks  smile

But everyone uses Linux because it's free and is faster. All those fancy graphics and programs aren't required for servers.

MS Paint has no antialiasing, has the full spectrum of all available colours on the computers, and I can't help you with the last one.
GIMP isn't that great for pixel art, really.

You're still not saying how Apple or OS X or even Macs are cool, just saying that it's cooler... no rationale.

Still, most people can't get another whole computer just for their server, especially if they are just learning PHP and just want to test out their scripts.

Mac has a built in Apache server as well as PHP then can be enabled with the click of a button. And you can do everything else you need to do with the server still running.

Yes it does. It does on Vista and 7 anyways.

And I've used Gimp with success with plenty of pixel art.

The ribbon layout in 7 is pathetic and depressingly uncool.

Cool is not rational. It is objective.

That's why most people coding either use a web host (w/ a Linux server, always) or have a Linux machine themselves.

I don't use Vista or 7, and I can't say anything about them.

You must have a reason for thinking something's cool. And as well as being objective, it's also subjective, and I can't agree with you at all. Cool is free access for everyone to what they need on whatever they need it, which is something Linux helps to provide.

I'm not arguing in favour of Windows, sir.

Windows fails.

I see you use XP. The MS Paint on there must be better.

Who cares. Cool is cool.

Cool doesn't exist.
And yes, I use XP. I can't use 7 or Vista, honestly. They're too shiny and obtrusive and counter productivity, not unlike Aqua or GNOME 3.
Windows doesn't fail. What I'm trying to argue here isn't that OS X sucks, it's that Windows is a valid, useful operating system that does have its purpose alongside OS X and Linux.

Yes, Windows certainly has a purpose.

For businesses who use 50 year old employees who still use XP and MS Word 95 and replace the enter key every 6 months.

And for people who haven't discovered OSX or Linux yet. It's a good platform for downloading linux on  tongue

I am exaggerating of course. Windows has a purpose for sure.

Businesses can't all use OSX because it moves so fast. It has low backwards compatibility. Unlike Microsoft who have to consider that many of their customers the afore mentioned people who cannot follow along so quick.

I mean, what on earth is iCloud going to be used for in businesses? Or photo booth for that matter.

Don't die man.

True. OS X is kind of counter productive. I wouldn't say it's the release cycle that's a putdown though.

How so.

It's good for productivity because you don't have to think about technical stuff.

The release system is good.

This topic seems controversial and, while not flamey yet, my fear is that if more people join, it could be come a flame war.  This is why the Scratch Team doesn't like topics specifically for arguing  hmm
