I don't really have an accent, well, I do to others who aren't English. But I'm sure Americans don't have an accent to people with the same accent, but watching the new MLP ep on a livestream made me laugh because of the adverts, I was on Skype watching it with someone else (also English) and we both starting laughing uncontrollably at the "Ah made it mahself" guy on the pizza advert (which was really weird, why were all the peperamis in neat rows?). I was picking up on the country accent (I used to live on the very southern coast), I was getting the London accent, but now I'm getting the scouse one (someone from Liverpool has moved in) which makes me sound like Lister at times and sometimes I will find it hard to actually say anything because of the accent.

Lister frpm Red Dwarf?

Oh and my dad can do Scottish accents, Australian,  Canadian, and he can even sound like Mike Myers (Shrek), and Samuel L. Jackson.

Re: Accents :P

I can do an almost decent British accent. All you have to do is act like the letter R doesn't exist, and add the "aaah" sound whenever possible.  tongue

Also, there are differences between accents in different parts of a country. For example, people in the northern half of the US almost sound British. People like me in the country in the south half of the US sound about the complete opposite of that. We also say the O sound in dog as aw. We say dawg.  tongue

In England we say "dog", and we say "car-nt" not "can-t", it's easier to understand someone when they have an English accent because everything is said so clearly.

Americans are hard to understand.

But seriously, how different to the regional accents get?

Really different. Probably the reason you only really see the one accent (plus maybe some southern accents) is because it could be difficult to understand. Anyway, I think Midwestern is the best to try and learn if you want to because it's the easiest and is easier to recognize.

i wouldn't say the midwest is necessarily the easiest
we're pretty easy over here!

I mean people recognize it more easily. Plus it's more widespread so it's easy to learn.

I FORGOT.

You think they are pointless until they aren't even in the word! "Riposte to earn my respect, Reginald" would have like barely any R sound from what I've heard and then all the sudden, "I've got an idear" 'I carn't do that"

(And Liru, how do we say Dog any differently than it is spelled?)

And uh, I know I like seriously stereotyped you guys right there but this has to be on of the more insulting threads I've read.

Some Americans say dawg, and cawfee, more of a Boston accent, but a girl I knew at school really didn't help herself fitting in, she refused to call it lemonade and called it soda, her accent really didn't help either.

We really don't. We've literally corrupted thousands of different words and assimilated them into our language.

Think, how can THEY be pronouncing it wrong when we got it from them?

Well, I prefer the british pronounciation, no offence :3

Say dog. Now say laugh. See how it sounds very similar? In the british/aussie pronunciation they sound completely different. The o in dog sound like the o in oil, but without the twist of the i at the end  smile

Do you know how silly the ideas presented in that argument seem to me.

That's like saying America has more native English speakers so we are the ones pronouncing it right.

Words don't become CORRUPTED. Dialects and such are just the way things happen/

The thing is with where I live is that I get a lot of Americans coming down wanting to see London, and they're just overly offensive. They're always asking why I'm not drinking tea or why I'm not wearing a monocle. England is hardly a posh country, the poshest person I know is Polish and she lives in a million pound manor which is still being made whilst people are mad at her for being rich. It's also annoying that they find it offensive when I can't understand them but it's perfectly ok to be racist towards me and my nationality with stupid stereotypes and the false knowledge that we all know the queen.

Wow.

For the record, those people sound like the idiot and scum of our country all stewing around your city because it's the capital or something.

Where I live we are apparently all completely fat idiots with no respect or dignity living in filth and being jerks. (Not to mention I live in Kentucky)
