Questions About Mesh

Q1: If you use Mesh does it show your IP address?
Q2: Can people hack you if they know your IP?
Q3: Do both people need Mesh to play Mesh games?

I might have more questions later...

Re: Questions About Mesh

I'll try my best.

Q1: Sort of. There are two kinds of IP addresses that can be used for mesh. There are local IP addresses, and global IP addresses. (not the right terminology, I know) Mesh gives you your local IP address. Only people connected to your same network can use your local IP address. A global IP address is required to connect to people around the world. Programs like LogMeIn Hamachi retrieve a global IP address that mesh can use.

Q2: If they're skilled enough, maybe. A hacker cannot do any damage with your local IP address. However, they may be able hack you with a global IP address. However, it is still very secure. Here's an analogy: An IP Address is like a town. The computers that share the IP address are the houses in the town. Giving away your IP address is like telling people what town or house you live in--you wouldn't ever do that. A criminal can't attack you if they know your address, but they know where to attack when they figure out how.

Q3: Yes. However, the mesh doesn't need to be obtained the same way. For instance, I can talk to other people who aren't like me, but if they speak English, we can communicate either way, and we wouldn't care that we're different.

Hope this helps (or made more confusion). If it confused you, ask some more questions.

Re: Questions About Mesh

As long as you don't abuse it, Hamachi with Mesh is generally very secure. If you are worried, use a proxy.

Re: Questions About Mesh

Here is an analogy for a proxy: There are two friends. However, they are forbidden to talk to each other. Perhaps friend 1 feels that friend 2 is dangerous. So, he uses a proxy, person 3. Person 3 acts as a messenger. Friend 1 says hello, person 3 says hello to friend 2, friend 2 says hello back, person 3 says hello to friend 1, etc..

The proxy is the only IP that knows your computer's real IP.

Hamachi is not really a proxy...

Re: Questions About Mesh

Not quite sure, as a matter of fact. Either way, proxy's aren't that important--they're more a tool for perfectionists.  tongue
