I believe you are thinking about cloud variables, which aren't currently available as of current Scratch. However, third-party Scratchers (non-scratch team) have created programs that allow multiplayer to happen in Scratch. Currently, there are two major choices that are in-active development:
FireMMO
FireMMO is created by me. It has been in active development since August 2011. It's main application is the chatting application, FireChat.
Chat.PY
Chat.PY and the other .PY projects are created by Magnie. I occasionally help with it, but it is mostly written by Magnie. Chat.PY is the biggest application, but there is also the in-production Virtual Space. Virtual Space is a MMO being written in Scratch using Chat.PY's core.
Reply on either the FireMMO or Chat.PY topics for more information on one of them.
I hope I could assist with your multiplayer desires,
