The Giver is a book about a dystopia where everything is perfectly controlled. The story centers around Jonas, who becomes apprentice to The Reciever of Memories, known to Jonas as The Giver - an old man who passes down memories of life before Sameness, given to him by his teacher.
It's really an interesting book. Discuss The Giver here.

I love that book! It's one of the best books ever written, IMO.
Also, isn't it the Receiver of Memory, instead of the Keeper?
Thanks for correcting me. I wasn't sure if it was the Reciever or the Keeper. I knew someone would correct me if I was wrong.

I don't like it. In fact, it's one of my least favorite books.

I don't recommend it.

-dystopia nut incoming-
It's an amazing book, but you need to understand the meaning of it before you can fully appreciate it. I think everyone should read it, but they shouldn't until they're old enough to understand everything.
Happened to me.
Read it a while ago. (A few years).
Didn't get it, but still thought it was a good book.
Read it in 2011.
"HOLY CARP THIS IS AN AMAZING BOOK. I NEVER NOTICED IT WAS A DYSTOPIA!"
Now that I understand everything in it, I can enjoy it more and get a better picture of what that world would be like.

Yep, we read this in english in 6th grade, but we did an entire semester on dystopias. the entire unit was epic, but this book was kinda slow for me.

I love all dystopias. This one is interesting, especially the ending.

Just the type. I don't usually like those kind of books. I picked it up because it had good reviews. I prefer books like Eragon.

The style of writing.
It was alright.

The reason I read it was for school, and we all had to finish it by today. This one kid who's really kind of a jerk walked in and was like, "DURR THE ENDING IS SO STUPID HE JUST DIES!"
But in the back of the book there was an author interview that says it's more of an ambiguous ending, and that he doesn't just die.

Gabe?
We have to read one of the sequels for school, too, and I'm starting Messenger.

Well, he's not the main character, but he is in there. He's just hinted at.
Should've said "shows".
