Add ☆ to projects

I think you should have a system where when a project is uploaded it has 0 ☆. Then there is a button users can click which adds one star to the count. Users could add more than one star, they could add as many as they liked. Then you could add a most ☆s section to the front page.

The rules:
No adding stars to your own projects.
No adding more than 100 stars to a single project.
Stars cannot be taken away once added.

Re: Add ☆ to projects

But what if there was a new Scratcher who wasn't very experienced, and they were really sad because no one ever gave them good ratings?

This, and it just feels too similar to love-its to me.

This is just the same as love its, except you can give more than one.
And some people would create another account just so their projects will get more stars  hmm

Re: Add ☆ to projects

I don't like the idea. It'd be better if the number of favorites and love-its created a rating... Say 40 love-its and 10 favorites... The rating would = 2.5 stars... Then there would be a section on the front page "Top Rated"

Re: Add ☆ to projects

5. 1-5 Stars

My first update! (Yeah, like you care.) I saw two instances of it on the suggestions area, which prompted me to place it here... it's been around already, but it's about time the answer was known.

I browsed around the different topics, and it wasn't long before there was the answer:

BWOG wrote:

The Scratch Team has already said no because they think that then new programmers will be discouarged that people rated it 1 so they leave Scratch. I wish they would add it.
To be honest, I never thought of that. *blush*. But that's true... think from a new user's perspective. You upload your first project, and Whoo-Hoo! It's on! You wait eagerly for any response, and what you see is a 1 star rating.
"Oh, that's nice," you think, before putting down a bunch of angry replies (if you've noticed the reply feature, that is).

Here's something else:

big-bang wrote:

The-Whiz wrote:
That would be cool! Rate whatever they think of the project and there could be a highest rated spot on the front page...

1 person rates 5 stars and nobody else has rated it - instant front page.
It should have to have 9< ratings to be eligible for the front page.
The-Whiz replied...

The-Whiz wrote:

How about it has to have 10 or more ratings to be on the front page and it starts out as a 5?

Or when you rate it it adds to a mass total, and it automatically rates it 1 if you don't rate it...

So:
Project A: 5
Project B: 5
Someone rates project a 2 and Project B 4:
Project A: 7
Project B: 9

And so on.
That seems a bit complicated (or maybe I'm just a bit dim   ). But there's that post about the Scratch Team's reason, and they're the ones who decide.

EDIT: Never mind, I was thinking wrongly - I get it now

Same concept, different way. Not going to happen.

Re: Add ☆ to projects

Yeah, the reason the Scratch Team hasn't added a rating system is because it causes new Scratchers to feel down on themselves if they get a lower rating. This has a similar concept, no?

People already do this for more views/loveits/favorites! Think of how bad it would be for  ☆ ratings!

It'll make people feel bad, and you SHOULD be able to take away a star...

Re: Add ☆ to projects

This is basically like the rating system for Flipnote Hatena. For Scratch, you would "give stars" to projects - and thus instead of Top Loved, you would have Top Starred. You can then give a star one star, or 5 stars, or as many as you want (however benjamin2 has suggested 100 as a limit). It's not a rating since it's not an overall rank out of 5 or 10, but it's not like love-its because if you want to really support the project, you can give it a lot of stars. In Flipnote Hatena, there were even colored stars which certain users were able to give out.

But I'm not really sure how this would work in Scratch.

Re: Add ☆ to projects

This is a good idea! I think that most people are confusing this for a rating. It works like love-its, but a bit better. Not loving a project isn't like rating it 0/10, so only giving it 10 stars isn't like rating it 10/100. I strongly support this idea, as you can show your support more accurately than just a "love-it". However, someone should be allowed to change the amount of stars they have given.
