Gold's really useful, good for:

Currencies
Clocks
Powered rails
Fancy tools
Fancy armour
Food

When you need wood underground, also find mineshafts.
If you need wool or string (you can craft wool with string), then find a cave spider spawner and make a trap.
If you need wool or string you could also break spiderwebs.
If you find an NPC village, check the blacksmith (the cobble one with lava), there are chests which could contain diamonds and stuff.
If you need wheat, and know of an NPC villager, use their farms as your farms.
If you need lava and are near an NPC village use buckets to take lava from the blacksmith.
If you find a dungeon, set a trap using flowing water.
If you have two of the same item, and they're both quite weak, put them together in the crafting grid to get a repaired item with the durability of both items, and a bit more (note that if either item is enchanted it will lose the enchantment)

I've done that, but it's a lot more work than it's worth. also, not everyone has skype.

It's not all that hard. I chat all the time over it.

Guys make a world with the seed "Sprite"

It's pretty cool, and it only starts with one tree but i found a sapling in a bush so i'm planting it.

And, i'm trying to find some coal to smelt all my iron, but i can't find any coal when i mine, i always end up with iron.
