That wouldn't lower the Spam as much. :>

It should be, yeah.

That wouldn't really help stop the forum spam, which was their main goal in changing the post counts in the first place.

I think if they did anything different, it would be >10000. But that doesn't really matter.

It's not incremented by thousands because that would encourage spamming. If it were incremented by thousands, there wouldn't be much point to this change.

Over 9000 :>

I've found that anything over 1000 shows that a Scratcher has a lot of experience. There's really nothing more you need to know.
When we refer to the spam this stops, it's not just SEO spam ("Russian bridesmaids on sale! Get one free!") but also post-count boosting spam, which fueled a lot of what Miscellaneous came to be before it was, you know, gone.

Quite. And I've noticed it continue and bleed outside of off topic areas because of the removal of Misc, so this should hopefully make it better.

You won't remove the number in our profile settings, right?

*LOL* How did I not think of that?!!
I think we should have an "It's over 9000!" mp3 that loops constantly on any thread where someone who has >9000 posts has a post. XD
It would be *so* *awesome*, aside from the fact that it would drive a massive spam tidal wave the likes of which we've never seen.
Someone should do that on another forum though..

Hmmm... Well, this raises an important question - is this a good criteria for becoming famous? It seems like making awesome projects would be a better one.well, some people like me are very active at helping scratchers on the forums but don't often post projects..
And that's a great thing! But I'm not sure if the post count really reflects being active and helpful very well... Unfortunately, things like that are really hard to quantify, and represent. It'd be cool if we could show a *helpfulness* number, but I know of no good way to do that.
Have you seen the "Thanks" system on other forums? Whenever someone posts something helpful, someone can press a button that says "Thank user" (that is in the same area as the report button) that add to the users "Time thanked", right under the post count.
@Topic: I really think that this update is kinda useless, though. There really aren't that many people that spam to up their post count. At the least, you should add some more tiers like >2000, >5000, etc.

BTW guys, if you want to see how many posts you have, simply go to Profile.

No, it means larger
Say your post count is 5000
5000>1000, because as you said the alligator eats the bigger number (what a hog)
(The first person I saw with it was Harakou so I thought he had hacked it or something ^^')

Me too, but I think you have it wrong. It's saying that (post count) > 1000. The alligator eats your post count, since it's bigger. I bet now you'll delete your post, because you were proven wrong (or at least edit it)

^Yeah, that it.
"<" is read as "less than"
">" is read as "greater than"
It's often confusing notation, though, even I get confused sometimes. ^^;

You'd be surprised how many people emphasize a lot of post count. It's almost like a game at some point when they say they have reached so-and-so post and then mention it in their posts (or when someone mentions a comment post number for someone else); there was even some fuss over who had the highest post count on the forums, too.
There's kind of no real point to having a post count other than as an indication of forum activity. A tiering system won't completely stop people putting emphasis on post count, but putting a tiering system in place should allow people to get a glimpse of how active a Scratcher is on the forums while placing less emphasis on the actual post count.
-> Speaking of which, those tiers are just ballpark numbers someone on the ST just came up with off the top of his head; the rest of the ST members and mods just happened to like those numbers at the time and thus came the decision to try it out. Just give it some time to see if it works before jumping to the conclusion to see if more tier numbers are needed.
