More Tutorials

I admit my ignorance.  I know that Scratch is simple enough for an 8 year old to figure out, but this 56 year old right-brained animator is still baffled by left-brained programming.  I go through the reference guide and small blocks of programming work fine on their own, but when I try adding sprites and have them interact when they touch each other nothing happens.
I would like to see more tutorials on the step by step process in making a game such as a Space Invaders genre.
Back in the 80's I played a lot of Intellivision sports.  I wondered how the boxing game worked.  How were all the various punches calculated?  In the football game, how was it possible to control one football player with a mouse, have him throw the ball to a second football player and then suddenly mouse control had jumped to the second football player.  Somehow you always controlled whoever had the ball.  I have tried downloading Scratch games that I liked to analyze them, but I still don't know what is going on.

I downloaded and analyzed your new Asteroids game.  It's incredible. I can learn a lot about programming from you.   Looking at the code did help clear some mysteries for me.  I am an animator new to programming.  Check out my animation at:  http://scratch.mit.edu/users/Hammination

You say your Asteroids game is incomplete.  Coming from an animation background, I have one suggestion for your explosions.  Your explosion consists of one costume that grows larger and then shrinks.  I think it might look cool if you have the costume grow larger and then ghost to 100%.  That way it would fade out like a Star Wars explosion.

Re: More Tutorials

I love your animation, that is very smooth. I'm a bit lacking on the visual side, so it hit and miss when it comes to graphics. I love the ghost idea for the explosions. I will be changing them to do that when I work on the asteroids program next (probably tomorrow night). The current explosion graphic is a place holder I stole from a google image search. I'm not a big fan of it, but its the best I've been able to find right now, but it is growing on me. I think the ghost effect might be the last thing it needs to work.

Hopefully I'll have that game finished by next week and I can move on to my next project, whatever that might be. I'm thinking about a 1942 type game of some sort or a lifeforce type game.

You might want to check back now and again on the asteroid program, the code changes a lot as I work everything out and get it ready. I just added random starting points for hte asteroids, and a cheesy way to handle infinite levels of difficulty.

Talk to ya later,
Don

Re: More Tutorials

I will check out your Asteroid game updates.  Another easy way to do an explosion in space:  If you paint a circle with no line around it in the Scratch paint program, you can use the gradient fill radial setting, so it is white at the center and fades to black at the edges.  Then you can do your explosion sprite growing larger and then ghosting.  I recently did that trick in Flash for a web client.  The only difference was that the circle I used went from a white center to an alpha channel edge.

Re: More Tutorials

Well on your first post it says, "...I know that Scratch is simple enough for an 8 year old to figure out..." . I agree to the "8" year old part. I am a tiny bit older than that.

Re: More Tutorials

Hello, you can find some Scratch tutorials (like letting sprites interact to eachother) and prescripted sprites on my Scratch Resources site: scratchresources.tk
