Re: Forum post counts now shown in levels

I see the logic of it, but I dislike it. I feel as though a simple >500 doesn't show other Scratchers how active you've been. I like to see posts counts, because it shows being veteran and most likely skill.

Hmm, I was going to disagree with you, but I think you actually bring up a good point.

If I were to not post for an entire year, when I come back, I would still have the same rank. Is that right? Or does that not really matter? I'm not sure.

Re: Forum post counts now shown in levels

I really like seeing how many posts I have, but not for rank.
Now I won't know how many posts I have until I get 1000 more?

Re: Forum post counts now shown in levels

I personally think it might be better to stop showing post counts altogether, as spammers will try to spam so they can get to the >1000 level.

Cool change! It's been mentioned many times that post count is good for giving a sense of a user's experience but bad since it encourages spam, so this seems to be a beneficial change to the forums.

It's important to note that "spam" doesn't just mean commercial spammers, but posts that don't benefit the discussion or encourage chatting and arguing.

My only wonder is why you chose numbers like ">1000", and not using some sort of named rank system instead. I saw Lightnin make a thread suggesting names, so I'm just wondering if that wasn't successful, or if it was decided that wouldn't work?

Lightnin wrote:

It'd be cool if we could show a *helpfulness* number, but I know of no good way to do that.

Haha yeah. Many people have suggested things like karma numbers where you can thumb up/upvote or thumb down/downvote people's posts, but there's plenty of problems with that. We want to way to highlight the users who give good feedback, but not necessarily shun down the users who post spam or are new.

Again I'll say a common idea I like: A Helpful/Experienced/Trusted Scratcher rank which is given by the Scratch Team or mods to people who help the most.

Thanks for agreeing, in some ways. I think that if experienced Scratchers are recognized, the community will be tighter.

It's currently visible on your profile.

In some cases, it's true. But in others, not. If someone only posts on the forums, but hardly ever uses Scratch, they can have a very high post count, but no ability to help out with Scratch projects. They could help in other ways though - but it depends.

I think I agree as well, although I'm not sure of the best way to show experience / helpfulness. Perhaps through "Experienced Scratcher" or something like that, but it needs more thought.

Huh, that gives me an idea I thought I'd throw out to play around with. It might be possible to show a general post count number for the past n days, where n can be any number we want.  Something like this for example:

256 posts in the past 90 days.

Do you think people would try to game / up post counts for the last 90 days? Probably... well, just a thought.

Re: Forum post counts now shown in levels

Maybe we could have it so the title "Scratcher" applies to 100+, "Experienced Scratcher" applies to 500+, and "Veteran Scratcher" applies to 1,000+.

The trouble with that is that there have been Scratchers with over 1000 posts who have rarely, if ever, made Scratch projects. So I don't think it'd make sense for them to have these titles.

Um, maybe instead of "Scratcher" it could become "Member." Making things, "New Member," "Member," "Experienced Member," and "Veteran Member."

Instead of >1000, shouldn't it be 1000+? That's easier to understand.

I think my "member" idea would work, but the actual post count would show.

Hmmm - Yeah...I guess it's marginally more understandable.  Maybe we could use words:

Posts: more that 1000

I think this will help with all the forum politics.

Lately, I've been thinking Scratch has expanded into more of a social network, but I can see it focusing back on projects now, which in my opinion is important.

Wow, that's a good point. I still sort of believe there should be a post count, though.  tongue

I liked being able to see how many posts a user had, but overall, I think this is for the better.

Every once in a while, I think it's important to zoom-out a little and see if your achieving what you set out to do, and when you have a bunch of features that distract from that, then you have to center yourself back to your original focus.

I don't spam, myself, I only try to help others and improve as a Scratcher by using the forums. But whatever they think is best, goes.

I know. I hate >#.

It looks ugly IMO.

And if someone has 499 posts and it says <500, it seems mean, to make it look like 'lol haha you have no posts'
