applejack-amcerbu-Hardmath123-collab

We can discuss our project here!  wink

In my opinion, amcerbu should handle programming, I can do music, and applejack should give some of his awesome graphics. That way, each of us has a job we like and combining stuff is easy.

I play piano and know a decent amount of music theory, so I could help out with the music as well.

Sure, go ahead and help out, I'm just saying if we all begin to get our hands dirty in all the different parts like programming, graphics, and music, we'll end up with nothing, like Xenon (hey, what happened to Xenon?).

EDIT: Let's brainstorm a bit to get an idea. I was just watching this, and I was inspired. What do you think?

@Hardmath:
That Tom and Jerry is my favorite episode, just saying off the bat.

Applejack and I had debated doing something like this: A line rider game where the play collects notes to make a tune.  The sled could be a bass clef.

I've also been interested in making a musical notation program (or even a program where the player enters a melody and the program composes a harmony).

So have I. I was working on something which translated taps of the space key into musically notated rhythms.

So yeah... It's not like I'm a bad programmer. I'm very good at taking other projects, understanding their scripts, and bending them to my will. I don't think we seem happy enough. We need to be enthusiastic! Wahoo!!! So, while we come up with an idea, let's come up with a name as well. Maybe Hamcerjack, or something?  smile

Re: applejack-amcerbu-Hardmath123-collab

I intend to get the Xenon team together and finish it after I finish my app. We almost finished Xenon, but some bugs got in the way. We started on the next part of the programming before the part before was completely bug free. That was our mistake.

I never said you were, I said you were a good artist. And, to reiterate, if we all mess with the same element, we're not gonna go anywhere; so I said each of us could pick a role, and gave my opinion as to what they could be.

About brainstorming: let's get organized. Do we want a utility application —like amcerbu's music notation idea— or a music video —like Tome & Jerry— or a game —like the sled— or something else?

Re: applejack-amcerbu-Hardmath123-collab

I think that games probably would receive the most positive feedback.  I'm not a huge fan of animations/music videos, and utilities do not always appeal to all users - the more features, the less accessible to people unfamiliar with the utility.

So, I'm in with applejack: I'd like to do a game.  But we can still integrate features of a music utility into it... a musical notation game, or something like that.

I like game too, so game it is! I support your linerider idea, but maybe it would be better off as a platformer, where you have to touch notes to play a tune.

Re: applejack-amcerbu-Hardmath123-collab

Essentially, they're the same thing.  I was thinking of something along the lines of (no pun intended) Canvas Rider, where the player has some control over the sled.  But a platformer might work too.  I've been wanting to program a platformer for a while now, and I think I have the physics figured out.

Anyway, it's your call.

I know, I spend half of my computer classes on canvasrider.com (or used to until they disabled the website). I was thinking of something like this (wait, I'm making a screenshot):

Re: applejack-amcerbu-Hardmath123-collab

Yeah! I think maybe you could collect notes and lay them out to make tunes, that could do things. I like how you would play differnt thinks in the Zelda games.

Re: applejack-amcerbu-Hardmath123-collab

Here's an idea:  You have to collect all the notes in the level.  Then, to unlock the next level, you have to lay the notes on a staff in the correct pattern.  Anyway, I'll get started working on building a "perfect platformer" base (if there is such a thing).  I suppose that we could delegate level design to one of you guys (I'm not good at it at all).

Anyway, here's what I'm thinking:

The player runs around a platform world, collecting notes (which play their sound when collected).  In addition to the notes, there are powerups: for instance, accelerando is a speed boost, ritardando slows you down, forte makes you bigger, piano smaller, etc.  We'll have to think about those.  The goal is to reach the end (double bar line) in as little time as possible.  After reaching the end, the player has to assemble the notes he has collected to create a simple melody.

Re: applejack-amcerbu-Hardmath123-collab

I just wanted to say you should make a game where the notes are platforms, and you have to jump from note to note to the double bar at the end.

I know I'm not part of this group, but my group is already doing something else so I just wanted to throw this idea out there.

Re: applejack-amcerbu-Hardmath123-collab

@amcerbu: Yeah! There could be right-facing repeat signs as checkpoints! And maybe, there could be portals that had to be activated (go to the ds al coda, warp to "da sighn," then get to the to coda sign and warp to the coda! I kinda want toe notes to look like jewels.. and you lay them out on a stone tablet to make a tune!

Re: applejack-amcerbu-Hardmath123-collab

How would the laying out of notes look/behave? I think we shouldn't worry about that. But I love the forte, piano, ritorando, etc idea, those are awesome! I guess notes should blink bright when you need to play (ie, collect) them and fade. If you catch it before it's gone, it plays the note (think guitar hero, except you move to the notes).

@amcerbu: There are planty of platformer bases. I'd suggest: 1) don't make a scroller, make a fixed-room, 2) use the bumper-sprite method. Oh, and anybody against the motion "amcerbu handles most programming"?

Maybe a little... I might want to add a few scripts in when I believe them necessary.

Re: applejack-amcerbu-Hardmath123-collab

I'm thinking the platformer will look something like N Game if you guys are thinking fixed-stage, rather than scrolling.  I'm looking forward to programming the scripts for slopes.

Anyway, I like Hardmath123's ideas for a guitar-hero style game.  I'll do my best to integrate object-collection.  Suppose you have a time limit to travel around the stage, collect the notes in order, and reach the end.
