Yeah, they need to add circuits. How can it turn on if it doesn't go in a complete circle?
How can putting a stick on a piece of cobble create energy? You need to take it with a pinch of salt, it'd be stupid if it had to be in a complete circuit as it'd limit what you could do with it.
