The old days...

Anybody here kinda miss the old days, where, as JSO said in the 'Are you famous' thread, front page projects would last for weeks? Back when almost eveyone knew each other and new ideas and games were being invented? It was only about 2 years ago, but I miss it! I mean, it's great now, with so many scratchers and such a big community, but...

Anyone else 'nostalgic'?

Hehe, yes those were golden times. ^^

Most of the old Scratchers left, sadly.

Dear Scratch Users,
I'm done with scratch, or at least making projects. I have made one last big game, thats both fun and teaches a lesson about water. It'd mean a lot if you gave me feedback.                              http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/bosox397/569201

Re: The old days...

I know it's sad  (and the Scratch Team probably does not likes what I'm typing right now...) but I really miss the participation of the Scratch Team on the forums. It looks like they are "less open for suggestions".

I think a lot of things that make Scratch "worse" seem to be caused by the Scratch Team not having enough resources: Server Dropdowns caused by not-having-enough-resources-to-pay-a-full-growing-with-the-usage-hosting-system, not enough team members to program AND check the forums all day. The Only real and daily connection between the ScratchTeam and the community seems to be paddle2see these days and - admitted - I would not like to fill in his role being all alone!

That criticism does not mean Scratch gets worse! I started up Scratch 1.1 (the scratch we used those days xD) and it drove me mad! Also, new people, be happy you don't have to use te old gallery system!  Scratch has improved so much...

Re: The old days...

Scratch sure has changed a lot! It's a lot easier to use, but I miss how it's so much harder to make new things, and it might be just me, but the projects were a bit higher quality back then, you didn't get so much violent ones, and a lot of them would be games and interactive things, whereas nowadays there seems to be a lot less.

Nah, there are a lot of great projects now, it's just that the first projects were all unique and original.  smile
We're too used to good projects.

Re: The old days...

The projects itself did not change, I think it is just the front page that does not filters out top-projects like it did before - lots of "Top Loved Lately" projects have just 20 loveIts. 20, that's almost nothing. There even are projects with only  7sometimes...

no, back then maybe 5 minutes, and now, even when most kids are at school, only about 45 seconds

Re: The old days...

The first time I ever went online you could go to the search bar and search something like 'sniper' and a great game would pop up, now just effortless animations. When I first registered Archknight's adventure was on the front page and every time I went on I checked the front page and I was never disappointed, there was always a great game there. Now so many people share and great projects aren't being made anymore.

Re: The old days...

I must say that I agree to some extent with elements of this discussion...it was nice when the community was fairly small and it had more of that "small town" feeling - it was easier to know who was who  smile .  I think there is still work to be done in that area - finding ways to cluster people of like interests without giving up too much of the diversity of ideas.

And I also think that Scratch is a suffering a bit from it's own rapid expansion with the server issues and the explosion of topics in the Forums. On the plus side, the server seems better this week and there have been some real improvements in opening up Front Page space to more projects.

As for the Golden Age being over...sure, it's over.  Because change is inevitable.  Let that Golden Age be over and done with so we can start on another one!

Yeah I liked the small community feeling and I wish there is some way to cluster together people with similar interests.

Re: The old days...

Ah, ye olde days! <sigh> ...

Don't believe everything others tell you about how things used to be better way back when you weren't around. I must have spent years of my youth agonizing over having missed Woodstock or the Beatles. But then there was Runrig and Peter Yarrow at the Beacon, which happened, of course, before any of you youngsters entered the scene  smile . So, while I do miss Jimi Hendrix and KevinKarplus I'm sure the best days of Scratch are yet to come. We can make it happen!
