Way to Reduce CPU Temperatures on Laptop?

Note: A fix would probably lead to a project, hence the placement "Things I'm Making and Creating." If this doesn't belong here, obviously do whatever for reporting/moving/closing.

I am currently typing this from our family laptop, a Gateway NV59C, for those of you who may want the model number. We have had issues in the past, where  the computer will immediately shut down, no BSOD, no error message, just a *click* and then a black screen. We believe that this is because of an overheat issue.
Right now, I am using a program called Piriform Speccy to show the CPU temperatures, and writing this I currently have a CPU temp ranging between 50 and 60 degrees Celsius, with only FireFox, Speccy, and Skype (in its annoying always-on doing nothing mode) running. Just a moment ago, running Team Fortress 2 only on the menu screen, the temperatures shot up to around 80 Celsius. That's 20 degrees short of being able to boil water on the chip. Sure, it may make the system water-resistant, but that runs a risk of damaging components.

So, I am looking to the community to give advice on any way to cool the CPU. This is a laptop, which I have on my lap, but I have made a habit of resting a generally cool area on the armrest of the sofa and the battery on my leg, leaving the main hot spot (probably where the processor is) uncovered so it can cool.

There's these little pads with fans in them that you could try to buy. That's what my parents did for our laptops.

Well, the Things I'm Making and Creating section is largely for stuff you are creating; since you haven't really created something yet, this topic doesn't really fall into that criteria.

The Internet is like a vast library and place of information, there's multiple advice out there on how to cool a laptop; you just need to take the first step in searching to find it.  smile
