I'm creating a setup for a [b]VERY[b] old laptop. It's just to play minecraft with my friend, and I'll be using my uber-powerful one, over LAN. Here is the awful stats:
a cpu like i3343 (or similar)
ubuntu 11.10 (currently installing)
12.1gb hd
and terrible lan i dont even know
Have you ever done something similar?
(Oh yeah, it doesn't have wireless -_- )

What on earth do you mean by i3343?
And how on earth are you going to play MC on that?
Even Minetest, which is supposed to run better on underpowered machines, rarely gets 5fps on our Pentium 4 40GB HDD laptop

12GB? Nice for an old computer, I spent 2/3 (maybe 3/4) of my life running on 8gb and 10gb HDDs.
Just so you know, it's not the Hard Drive you should be worried about, it's the RAM and processor speed. You need at least 512 free ram to run Minecraft with lag, 2gb RAM for close to no lag.
How much RAM does that computer have?

Pentium 4 and some reasonably basic IGP (with 3d graphics) will do. I've run MC on a P4 2.8ghz desktop with a geforce fx 5200 and it's pretty smooth, so this should be doable dispute that notebooks are slower than their desktop counterparts. One definite no is a PIII, that will run as slow as nether.

Dont' worry, you won't, just to let you know, so you don't get anxious about it, and so that you don't get dissappointed when it doesn't work

I've tried to refurbish an old laptop before (specs down bellow), but the notebook has hard drive errors, and I don't wanna spend money on another hard drive.
Specs:
Compaq Presario 1600-XL142 (suspect able of having a 16xl256 system board)
192MB RAM
Intel PIII 650Mhz Mobile
Now dead 6gb hard drive DX
12" 800x600 Screen that doesn't know anymore when it's closed : (
DVD ROM
Broken Floppy
Trident CyberBlade i1 that steals 8MB ram
Yeah, that is a definite no for minecraft hardware. Wish you better luck than I had. (That notebook i have was intended for old software, by the way)

Graphics card is also important. 3D is almost a neccesity.

You should turn it into a digital picture frame or something 800x600 at 12" doesn't sound too bad

Yes, I know
And just because you're good with computers, doesn't mean a rubbish laptop is suddenly going to run MC

Alrighty! It definately will NOT play mc
