I think you should do the friend & follow thing, instead of just friend list. This will help organize our current friend lists; for example, I have like 67 friends and its too hard to manage. Although, if you do do the friend & follow thing, however, will it remove everyone on our friend list, and we have to re-  friend/ follow them, or what?

Scratch on!

That's a good question! If we were to move to a facebook style friends system, I think we'd do it by turning everyone's friends into people they follow. So, for a brief moment, there'd be no friends on Scratch!  lol

But of course then everyone could friend each other after that and get things sorted pretty quickly.

I think I like the friend/follow system better because most of the friended people I have are so I can quickly acsess their projects without having to search their username. +1 or thumbs up or whatever you want to call it to this idea.

I think this is a good idea.  I personally don't like adding people to my friends list unless I actually know them.  Following would be a good solution to this because I can have easy access to the pages for people whose projects I like without having to call them friends.  Frankly, if I don't know you in real life, you're not actually my friend.  Maybe I'm taking this whole "friends" thing too literally, but that's how I interpret it nonetheless.  I also like DarthPickley's idea about adding a list of people that have you on their friends list (or, as it may soon be, people who are following you).  I don't know if I would use it for anything, but it seems like a good idea to me.

Yep, thats my opinion

What do you think? Is it worth changing the friend system on Scratch? Or should we just keep the friends system the same? Join in the discussion and share your thoughts.

Check it out, and then join the discussion on this thread!

I think it would be a good idea to do a mix of both. On clutter there is something where you can be come someone's fan, and it would be fair to have a friends request system too!  cool

Sooner or Later. Or sooner. Not much, except for a lot. In a way. But it will come no matter what.

Re: Scratch 2.0: Friend or Follow?

I like the old system. If someone has to accept a request, then if they friend you they could probably see more things, like for privacy. Scratch doesn't really give out information so we should keep the old system.  big_smile  >.<

What personal information do you put on the Scratch website that isn’t already accessible to everyone else?

I don’t think this argument makes sense.

lol  That's true, you wouldn't be able to friend yourself!

That DOES NOT MAKE ANY SENSE.
Your YOU. Why would you wanna be friends with YOU? When your YOU?

BTW we should make the friend list like facebook. It will be easier. I like the idea of following to.

COMMENT: Keep the friend system the same, but add a watch button and a "Latest from the watch list" on the front page.
I want this, because I add everyone that adds me, so I get random stuff all the time, and not good quality stuff that I want to watch.  smile

Re: Scratch 2.0: Friend or Follow?

Code:

What if this message showed up when Friending:
You've asked [name] to be your friend! If he accepts
you guys will be known as "Friends!"
When receiving a request:
[name] wants to be your friend! If you decline,
he will still see your newest projects on his homepage.
(Accept) (Decline)
When being accepted:
You are now friends with [name]!
When being declined:
[name] declined your friend request. Don't feel bad
though! Many people like to keep their friends list
for specific people and you can still see his newest
project on your homepage!

I'm glad to think that the community will always be kind and helpful, the language will always be a fun and easy way to be introduced into programming, the motto will always be: Imagine, Program, Share - Nomolos

Re: Scratch 2.0: Friend or Follow?

I agree with the suggestion that both the 'friend' option and the 'follow' option should be available.

I also think there should be a 'collab' option, where you add that person as a collaborator allowing them to have access to your projects which you upload to a 'draft' folder.
This way, they are notified whenever your collaboration is updated and they can access drafts of the collab. The other members of the community, however, cannot access projects in the draft folder which ensures privacy/security when working on collabs and also eliminates the need for test/collab accounts and account password sharing.

Re: Scratch 2.0: Friend or Follow?

Thanks to everyone who shared their views on this!
We've decided, for now, to go with a "following" only strategy. So there will be no friends in Scratch 2.0  tongue

After we get 2.0 off the ground and all sorted out, we may consider also adding a "Friending" feature that would work the same as friending does on other sites, like facebook. But for now we want to keep it simple and clear. So in 2.0: you can follow others, and others can follow you.
