Hmmm... this could be kind of tricky. Sorry if this has already been asked in the previous six pages, but what about just auto-closing all topics that haven't been active in n number of days (90 to start with?) Do you think that would work as well?
I guess it depends on if you think full Scratchers should be able to necropost, and only New Scratchers should not be allowed to.

I like that idea, personally. Many forums of sorts have automatic messages on threads that appear after a certain amount of time, that say that "it may be necroposting if you post on the topic you're viewing" or something. This is of course, the best way to add it for our forum. Reporting is usually an option if you want to re-open a thread of course.

TBH that frightens me because it could stop feedback on rediscovered threads, but I can't see that happening too much

Exactly.
Full Scratchers have been around the forums for some time, and are more likely to understand the conditions in which it is acceptable to necropost. But New Scratchers are, well, new--they are unlikely to understand this. By the time they become full Scratchers, they should be able to necropost. Requiring a report on a automatically closed thread, in my opinion, just places more responsibility on already over-worked moderators.

But... New Scratchers can't learn that they shouldn't necropost by that.
Maybe there could be a thing where the post box goes like this:
This topic has not been posted on in over a month. To prevent spam by new users, users with New Scratcher status cannot post on topics like these. Full Scratchers can, under the right circumstances.
And it could also have a warning for full Scratchers.

That sounds like a good idea.

See scimonster's post. And even assuming they don't do that, they could make a sticky topic about it or something like that.

Yeah. I've already seen it.

The problem then is that sometimes old threads may need to be posted on. However, New Scratchers often don't understand the specific, rare circumstances when it is permittable to post on an old topic. You can just report for a mod to open it again.
That would make too much extra work for mods.
Closed topics don't need to be talked on very often...

Right now, they don't. But if we had to report every time we needed to open up an old thread...

Support! Actually, I think all Scratchers shouldn't post on threads too old.

I support, however, I think there should be an exception on TIMAC / TIRAP posts because they can't really go out-of-date.

Thanks for your support!
For those, though, I still think it's better to create a new thread.
