Chainsmithing

So I read on another Misc. (oms... I just realized that some new scratchers dont know what misc. was) topic that someone was doing chainmail smithing and I really want to try it. It sounds fun and I tried the technique with plastic rings (old lego thingy) and it was pretty fun. I want to go and buy some wire to work with.

Andybody else do this?

Re: Chainsmithing

I don't, but the technique used to make jump rings for jewelry making is the same as the one used for chainsmithing. I use the jump rings to make single strands of chains for things like necklaces or bracelets.

I did see this really cool tutorial for a chainmail dragon bracelet, so I might try to attempt it again. ^^

Do you make jump rings by wrapping wire around  a rod with pliers?

Looks more like a vest, but whatever.

I always figured the first thing you started on with anything like that (knitting, weaving, macrame, etc.) was a blanket. I guess I was wrong.

A chain blanket would just be a lot of material, you could use it to make a piece of armour.

Do you make jump rings by wrapping wire around  a rod with pliers?

Well, you usually wrap a rod with a long piece of wire (pliers not necessary, but they are handy if you have a bad grip on the wire), and then you just snip away with a wire cutter or a small saw.

Here's a good tutorial on it.

Thats what I do! I use pliers because I use thicker and stiffer wire thats hard to bend.

Actually, you would sleep with it. Or at least I would. Or make a tent. THE COOLEST TENT.

Well, it depends on the material used.

Using a lightweight material like aluminum would make a chainmail blanket easy to lift. One made out of steel would be very heavy and hard to pick up.
