I don't think they are trolls. Rather, I think they are just a reaction to the unexpected event of plenty of teenage boys getting a liking to the show "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic". The boys use a mix of the words "bro" and "pony" to form the word "brony".
I'm not sure if you already knew this, though. XD
In short - no, I don't think the "Brony fad" is meant to be a trolling-device.

There are a lot of trolls that do use MLP as a vehicle for their trolling, but there are a lot more people like me who honestly love the show with all their heart and take its lessons into our lives. I can see how you might be confused, but that simply isn't the case.
