If you are not american, this doesn't really affect you.
The USA is thinking about creating a law that would shut down any sites that have material not made by them. That is saying, if you post a picture from say, Calvin and Hobbes, you could get the site you posted on BLOCKED in america. Reditt, Wikipedia and Facebook are all sites that are protesting this, so why not scratch?
What they are doing here is policing the internet. This not only gives them more power than most people are comfortable with, but this goes against the first amendment, the freedom of speech.
EDIT: LOL i sound like a mod

There are too many topics about this, especially since SOPA is now dead. We do not need the entire front page of misc. filled with topics protesting a dead bill.
Offline
Actually it affects everyone, the site is taken down completely, and the bill failed.

Sad, isn't it?

I actually don't really care whether it passes or not, and I live in America.

I think that you need a life then,
This breaks the constitution in more ways than the health care bill could in a million years!
We'd end up like,
CHINA

Just cause you can't go two seconds without your precious little internet doesn't mean you need to get on other people's case about it.

In all honesty I think intellectual property is intellectual property, and if someone doesn't want the junk they own on the internet then you've got no business to be posting the junk they own on the internet
Freedom of speech isn't about having the ability to spout out logos and brand names and screencaps of television shows

What?
What's up with all the people protesting SOPA hating here?

Everyone seems to say that that S.O.P.A. and P.I.P.A. are on the shelf and done with. This is something that can be worked on any day.

PIPA isn't on the shelf at all, I have no idea where people are getting that rumor from.
In fact, the Senate is going to vote on PIPA on the 24th. And last I checked (which was today) we're currently 35 senators short of stopping PIPA. Once PIPA passes, then it's likely that SOPA will pass as well since there's even less support in the U.S. government against it.

http://www.scratch.mit.edu/ext/youtube/?v=JhwuXNv8fJM&list=PL7F28DBB364B0C0FF&feature=plcp An analogy from that video I like is that he says they are putting people who admitted to not knowing how to use the internet in charge of this passing. He explains that's like putting Toddlers in charge of a 777, but not one 777, having all of them run by toddlers.

But if it's vetoed, do they have enough support to carry it on?

They have a TON of support. Mainly from the idiots we managed to elect that can't use the internet for their life.
