A mistake in literature?

I discovered this quite a while ago, but I'm posting it now.

U is supposed to be a vowel, right? Well imagine you and your friend are having a heated discussion about unicorns. Nobody's gonna say 'AN unicorn', they'll say 'A unicorn'.

I don't really understand this. Any thoughts?

Re: A mistake in literature?

Depends on the sound of it.

You tend to use the one that will sound less stressed.

Re: A mistake in literature?

Unicorn is pronounced as "You-Ni-Corn", though, and Y isn't a vowel in that form.

Re: A mistake in literature?

The un rule only applies based on how the beginning of the word is pronounced, it's not reliant solely on if it's a vowel or not

That's for words that start with a vowel sound.

Re: A mistake in literature?

The use of "an" is determined by the pronounced sound at the beginning of the word rather than the letter itself. Your example, "unicorn," may begin with a vowel, but is pronounced as though it had the consonant 'y' at the beginning. Conversely, some words beginning with consonants, such as "hour", may require the use of "an" for a similar reason.

Re: A mistake in literature?

No, it's the way it's pronounced
That's why you say 'an hour', but not 'an history'

Re: A mistake in literature?

It's because you pronounce it "yoo". It's not the first letter that determines whether an "a" or an "an" should be put before it, it's the pronunciation of the first letter that's important.
