About 4.5 million people have bought the game. According to childstats.gov, there are about 72.1 million children in the US alone. That calculates to about 5 percent. BUT, also remember that many adults also play the game and also it is made in Sweden for an international audience, so probably only about 2-3% of American children actually play it.
Therefore, the "it controls 95% of people" argument is in fact JUST the opposite.

Also, how many games similar to Minecraft are actually POPULAR? Some random people can make a 3D world with blocky graphics but if nobody uses it then that argument is invalid.

I don't care if people play it a lot, but I don't like it when people say it has infinite possibilities. It doesn't. It's a building game.

Minecraft IS actually overrated. I bought it when it was on INDEV (Before the alpha) in late 2009. It isn't that great.

I bought it on the 5th update, MP was the best thing to ever happen, SSP gets really boring.

So, being a past minecrafter hater, I know that 95% of the 5% people who don't like minecraft haven't played it before.

minecraft isn't too bad, but It's overrated.  The fans get on my nerves.
I like terraria myself, however people can't seem to like it and minecraft at the same time.
They always say BUT IT'S 3D!
