I've run into a weird problem with importing sounds to scratch. I want a helicopter sound effect, so I tried to get it on scratch as an mp3, but it said invalid audio format. I changed it to a WAV file, but that didn't work either! What format does a sound have to be in to use on scratch. In the past I've been able to import both WAVs and MP3s. They bothe show up in the import menu, but when I try, I get this message

^^
some mp3's don't work, though.
If you only rename it, I think audacity can convert music to another file format.

Doesn't changing the .mp3 tag to .wav change it? I went to properties and renamed it, and then it went from
Title.mp3
mp3 file
to
Title.wav
WAVE file
So even if it says it's a Wav, it isn't?
I'll try audacity. is it free?

No, not necessarily. That trick is usually applied to text-based documents, but often times it doesn't work with other file types.
You should get a converter when trying to change file types. Audacity is free to download and already converts the file to uncompressed .WAV by default, that should work.
