What does compression actually do?

Compression is pretty much what it sounds like, it compresses the size of images and sounds in a project so that the project is smaller in size.
However, compression usually results in lesser quality, so if you want to keep your images and sounds at their best quality, it would be better not to compress the project.

Yeah, that explains it.
I compressed a project once. But then the quality was too poor to work as well.
So, use it with care.

avoid it completely is usually best
do it by hand by using an outside editer (free Irfanview ROX!!) to compress images then replace them back into Scratch
and avoid .wav files, they are huge
