How to connect Wedo motor to the computer?

We bought a wedo motor from Lego. We thought it would be a usb to connect to the computer to use with Scratch since it says you can use it. But, we can't see how you are supposed to connect it to the computer? How does that work? Here's a picture of what we have.

Hmm... What's that lead on it I see in the product picture? Does that work in it, or is it for something else?

Oh no! We have to buy that! Why doesn't it say you need the usb hub? Do you even need the motor? Or can you connect any motor to it? We don't have the whole set; it's too expensive. We just bought the motor which is what we thought we needed. Is it worth buying the hub? What can you connect to the motor that's not lego?

The motor connects to the hub which is USB. That is the only way to connect the motor to the computer.

Yes, you do need the hub to  power the motor.  You can connect other motors to the hub as I have by using an adapter cable:

I purchased the full set and this may be a better deal than just buying the hub;
