I'll give you one word:
Lists
Think about it. The Disappearing Text Bug first showed up in Scratch 1.3. Lists were first in Scratch 1.3. Lists are just a whole lot of text. Whenever I get the Bug, I'm using a list. Think about it.

Hmmm. I wonder...you might have something here! But it's probably going to be something that remains a mystery as I think the transition to the web version of Scratch should kill that bug once and for all.

I think you're right! It happened to me, I think I was using a list.

I have got that bug while just doing simple scripting! Hasn't happened to me since I got 1.4 though...

But I'm not using lists.

It seems to be a bit quick to jump to this conclusion. After all, a correlation doesn't always signify a cause. Still, I suppose it's possible, especially if Paddle seems to agree.

I got the bug while making my chopper test (link in my sig (my latest project test)) If you look at it, you will see it has no lists at all, I didn't even touch lists.

maybe it's just that lists are in scratch, they don't have to be showing.
Well, it's not that much of a problem, so it's not like we will get rid of lists now...

I've only had the bug when in the Paint editor.

I don't really mind the disappearing text bug.
It's easy to fix it once it happens.

I think I've had the text bug with no lists.

Ok, this is a limitation. There is no "heap" in Squeak, unlike some others like Cocoa.

good point! got an idea! get rid of lists all together! barely anyone uses them anyway6!

no, its the memory usage, if youuch on dah list it WILL make memory for squeak low, so put AS LITTLE TEXT AS POSSIBLE!

Anyone who uses array based raycasters (such as myself) uses them and they are a very important part for programming.

I'm not sure that memory is causing the disappearing text glitch (I honestly don't know what the glitch is in fact) but lists also don't use a lot of memory. Every character on a list is about 3 bytes each.

I think we're close to solving the mystery of the Disappearing Text Bug.
It's a bug in the Windows server.
I've got a similar issue on Word 2003, and one Scratcher said they've got an issue associated with images, not text. Some people got it in versions before 1.3. I use a Mac OS X and I never get the bug, or a similar issue. One part is unresolved: does it happen on Linux?

I'm not sure but I think if it was a Windows-only problem someone would've noticed the pattern by now.

Lists are what make scratch powerful! I'm working on a HUGE project to make scratch just as powerful as BYOB in a normal scratch project, and lists are a CORE part of it. Without lists, I would have to have thousands of variables and REALLY long scripts That would use up so much more memory than having lists.
LOADS of people DO use lists; it's just tiny compared to the number of beginners that don't understand them and therefore don't use them. Lists are a powerful feature of scratch so we should not get rid of them.
Anyway, I do believe lists are part if what causes the bug (along with costumes with text) because whenever I get it, my project has at least one list, and at least one costume with text on it. It should be fixed when 2.0 comes out, anyway.
