Whenever I send a scratch program from one computer to another and open on the other it says bad header and doesn't open. The computer I programmed my program with is Windows XP and the computer I send it to is Windows Vista. Is that the problem? Will it work if I use a USB to transfer the file instead of emailing it?
I am using version 1.2.1 on both computers. If I send from XP to Vista it doesn't work, but it works the other way around.

what version of scratch are you using to open the project? if it's a version below 1.3 and you're trying to open a 1.3 project, that's not going to work

This bad header message is happening for me too. I am creating on a Mac OSX, saving on a server and trying to open the file on another Mac. I also received the bad header message when I tried moving the file with a pen drive and attaching it to email. I am using the same version of Scratch during each of these attempts. This seems to be a new problem that I have not experienced before. Last week I was able to access my Scratch file on a machine other than the one I created it on.

There had been some issues with older versions of Scratch and Vista, but they should be resolved in v1.3. Is it possible for you to upgrade?
The bad header message can also happen if a file is corrupted - say by pulling a usb stick out of a computer while saving, or in some cases when copying a file over a network with the wrong type of file encoding (as can happen with ftp or some web based file stores). It doesn't sound like this is the problem you are having, but to test this idea out...you can try copying a project that does not work in Vista back to xp and see if it then continues to have problems (even though the original had been created & worked in XP before).

I need help with a bad header issue! My version is higher than the version on the computer that I want to send it to.
You can always upgrade to version 1.3.1. If you have 1.2 on your computer and the other one is 1.3.1, then upgrade the 1.2 computer to 1.3.1. To get to the download page, just click this link!
I hope that helps!

I have also recently have had a bunch of projects report the "Bad header" message. I access the Internet at the local public library and transfer the files with a USB "thumb drive". So possibly some of the files could have gotten corrupted through that, but I always make sure to "undock" my USB before removal. Plus, some files are corrupted and others are not (all from the same days of downloads).
Some "Bad header" files were already loaded on my computer (previous downloads), and they have worked, but now all of a sudden they are not working and reporting "Bad header".
I have the most current version of Scratch. I just downloaded it this week. I am also using XP on a Dell computer (Pentium 4).
I just uploaded a project and it said it was accepted, so hopefully that one doesn't report any problems (territorial_shark_v01a)
* UPDATE: I rechecked everything and had found that I indeed did have a older version loaded, which was causing the "bad header" error messages. I had initially loaded the new version onto another computer so I would not tie-up my main computer, but I found that it was so much easier just to have Scratch on my main computer. So when I installed Scratch I must have loaded the old version by mistake.
- Now all projects are working as they should.

Sorry for the bump.
all my oldest projects have that bad header problem, and some don't, strange!
And I didn't carried them away, that time there was no pendrives or CDs that I put in the projects...
EDIT: I just opened a working project, and a not working project in notepad. They don't have the same beginning, I don't know programming very well, so I don't know what's going on, but maybe I should replace the header with the working header, if I discovered in which part of the text starts the header and which part ends :\

Hi lu9, are you using the latest version of Scratch (version 1.4)? The bad version usually comes up if you used an outdated version of Scratch.
Otherwise, could you try to share the project with the "bad header"? It's also very likely that the header could have become corrupted. if you closed Scratch while in the middle of the saving process.
