That is pretty awesome brainstorming!
I love the idea of stickies being collapse-able and users being able to sticky their own chosen topics to the top of another section! Perhaps when a new sticky is added, collapsed sticky spots will un-collapse?
We have some forum feedback, by the way!:
Hey guys, for a little market research I am just finding out what you, the Scratchers, love about the Scratch fora and what you think isn't right and should be added/made better. All posts are helpful, but please post the truth! Many thanks, Sparks.
EDIT: Since people seem to be talking a lot about the users, I'm more interested in hearing about the features the fora offer for this research, thanks!
Here's a list of things people have said already. Rather than reposting, please +1 them in your post
We like:
Interacting with the community [8]
Learning new and interesting things [2]
Find info on a problem [2]
Ask for help [1]
simple to use design [1]
kind and helpful mods [1]
We dislike:
"Scratch time" rather than local time [7]
should be easy to fix
spam preventatives that inconvenience the innocent (e.g. no img tag) [7]
definite one to try and fix
"2cool4rules" - people misusing the fora [5]
not really sure how to solve this one
old-fashioned forum blocks [3]
no preview for quick-post [3]
no "read" mark next to read threads [2]
should be easy to fix
linking to youtube repeat, not allowing video embedding [1]
no other forums i've seen allow video embedding
disabling smilies in a post is not remembered [1]
no way to appreciate posts (like button) [2]
built in like button?
view counter is not unique [1]
should be easy to fix just only allow one view counter increment per ip.if the user is authenticated you can still change the view counter, even if your ip has already had a view on that thread
not enough time to edit topic titles [1]
maybe change it by...10 mins
more than one thread discussing pretty much the same thing [1]

While your on the topic of stickies, I think each user should be able to choose their own favourite threads to sticky so that the only stickied threads shown are ones of which the scratcher has chose.
Maybe we could have 2 sticky sections: official stickies and user stickies.
A user can make a topic inappropriate and stick it to the top of the board. Bad idea.

but user stickies would only be stuck on the board if you're logged in as the user who stickied them

User stickies are only stickied for that user. For everyone else, those topics will appear as normal.

Hey, instead of extending the title change time, why don't we make it indefinite?

because it would seriously confuse someone trying to follow a thread if the name changed all the time...

Note: Old fashioned forum blocks are changing very soon.

Well, it would be a little confusing, but most forum systems have this enabled.
Another thing, some forum systems have it so you can have a second title.
Example:

That's what the topic descriptions are.

Interesting. Couldn't you SOLVED it yourself?
Since there will be an hour limit of editing the topic name, I think it's a reasonable request.

User-created "stickies", as you're calling them, are probably better off getting called "favorites" or the like. There is the option to "watch" threads in some forum systems, with notifications of updates via email or RSS. I never use those, but evidently some people do
Topic icons are also a good idea. Generally the topic icons I've seen are just smilies, but we can add others if we want. Also, adding titles and icons to individual posts would be a nice feature.
Regarding avatars, topic title editing and other Scratch-specific thingies: we can still implement them, because from what I see, this'll just be "the forum system made by Scratchers" rather than "Scratch's forum system". If the Scratch Team does decide to use it for some odd reason, then they can configure it to their liking (hopefully).

This might exist already but what about a 'my posts' page were all of your own topics appear. Otherwise you end up losing track of your own topics.
do you mean "my topics" as well as "my posts"?

I think the ability to watch topics would be a good idea, so you can get an email when someone posts in the topic.

I think Scratch needs a update, mainly about time zones. My time zone is 0 GMT but when I choose it in the menu, it switches back to a foriegn time zone! So now every post is at a different time to my own.

That is the "Scratch Time" ( it's the time where-ever MIT is ) and it's forced to be it, so you can't change it. Just find the difference ( + a few hours, or - a few hours ) between your time and Scratch's time, once you figure that out, you can easily find out the time a message was posted and you can plan stuff in Scratch's time instead.

Here are my suggestions, but a little more wide:
Scratch Forums:
Accessible User Forum Profile Pages
Customisable Forum Page
- Different Background
- Different Font
- Different Color Scheme
I'll add more things tomorow.

I think we could have the user-page default to the user's CSS/Theme/Skin, how about that?
