Anyway, just gradually build up your friendship, by finding interests you both share, and build on it from there 
And why does it matter that it's halfway through the school year?

Sorry, but ask cheddargirl. She always has good advice. In fact I'm giving you good advice by asking you to ask cheddargirl 

Whenever I have a crush on someone (not often.  I tend to see one guy, and have a crush on him for a few months, sometimes even a year.  And usually I don't like anyone.  I'm very picky.) I just talk to them like normal, get to know them. 

Don't date, trust me, when you're in your early teens, dating can get messy, since most girls I know date one guy for a week, dump him, and a week later start dating again.  One girl in my class has had NINE boyfriends.
