Some people get them done at birth, though I think you should have the choice. Personally, I was 6. And 13 when I got cartilage (today, aha XD)

It wasn't that bad, actually. The shock made me a little faint (I wasn't feeling great to start with xD) but it's fine now and doesn't hurt at all, well hardly c:
