Stats on activity on main site vs. forums

There are lots of different stats available on stats.scratch.mit.edu, but they don't give a clear picture of how many accounts are active on which parts of the site. Paddle2See has been collecting some additional stats recently, so I thought I'd share some that I found interesting.

We only have two weeks worth of data so far. I averaged them to get per week values.

Total number of accounts used to create (comments or projects) on the main site: 19,023
Total number of accounts that posted on the forums: 680
Total number of accounts that posted in the Misc: 309

It was surprising to me that the number of accounts that posted in the forums was only 3.5% of the number of accounts that created a project or comment on Scratch. And the percentage that posted in the misc was only 1.6% compared to the total number of active accounts on the main site.

What do you think of these numbers? Were they as surprising to you as they were to me?

Re: Stats on activity on main site vs. forums

Not really.  tongue

For some sites, if the main site has a lot of activity, then the forums are kind of an extra space. Take dA for example, most people usually are just there to post art and see art and comment on people's art, most of the users I interact with there and myself don't really use the dA forums - I bet it's the same/similar on Scratch where most users are entertained by posting projects and looking at other peoples projects and commenting on them.

Re: Stats on activity on main site vs. forums

Not very surprising to me, as the people that post in the forums are pretty much always the same known faces(well, names), and they aren't that many.
If we consider a website with near 1 million registered accounts and a forum with only a fifth of that, and then take into account the massive amount of bot-created users, the numbers fit.

What surprised me, however, is that only 2% of the registered users on the site actually are active. I would have imagined at least 30%...

Re: Stats on activity on main site vs. forums

Wow that is surprising, but that just shows us that there is a whole other world out on the main site. I've started to notice this as I spend more time on the main site, and was almost astonished at how many users were oblivious of the forums, and happy about it.  smile

I guess I'm used to that one. Remember, those are total registrations from the beginning of Scratch time, back in 2007. Also, many people only check in once in a while - this only reflects the average number to check in during one week.

A little bit surprising. I did expect a small percentage, but not one *that* small.

No, my impression from the past few weeks is that these numbers / percentages have been pretty stable for a while. There are other metrics that we've been tracking for longer that haven't changed much - flag rates, etc. So if these recent numbers reflected a recent change, I'd think those numbers would show a similar change. But I don't really think they have.

It's true - Scratch is really broad and diverse. But if you mostly hang out in a particular corner, you tend to think that that corner represents all of Scratch. But since who you spend time with on the main site depends mostly on whose projects you regularly follow and comment on, or what galleries you hang out in, there are lots of small "other worlds" out there.

Scratch is more an ecosystem than a monoculture. That's one of the qualities that makes it interesting to me.

I don't think they are surprising.  Scratch is all about programming, and not really about the forums.  The forums are just to discuss the programming.
