It'd be better if anyone could post some LOGICAL grounds for their opinion...
I'm neutral when it comes to personal opinion. Mario and Sonic are both awesome in their own ways. No need to hate any of 'em!
Of course, the problem is how much you're good at programming, if you're willing to take on a difficult task, and if you want your game to be creative and professional.
There are a lot of Mario games on this website. Mostly because Mario has only a few physics and fundamentals in his games.
One, jumping.
Two, gaining momentum while running.
Three, stomping on enemies and gobbling power-ups.
However, most Mario games on this site contain the jumping mechanics only, and they're not even half-good!
If you're able to make a Mario game containing the fundamentals and still make it enjoyable, then I suggest Mario. Otherwise, it'd just be one of those wannabe project fails.
Oh, and you may want to consider a score system, like in the original Mario games.
Sonic is a lot more complex on the other hand.
First of all, he's got a LOT more animation to do. This is mainly the graphical differences between the Sega Genesis (Sonic's debut console) and the Nintendo Entertainment System (Mario's debut console). Being 16-bit, Sonic could show a lot more motion than 8-bit Mario.
Secondly, Sonic has a lot more mechanics to his gameplay.
He has both X-scrolling and Y-scrolling, both X-velocity and Y-velocity (especially since his basic attacks are running, jumping, and spin-dashing), 360 loops, and much more.
Moreover, Sonic games require smoother tilesets, moving backgrounds (to fully enjoy the running experience), and a more colorful, creative scheme.
Finally, Sonic games need to show innovation, new ideas, bosses, and more on.
But hey, it's just what a exclusive Sonic game needs.
For a scratch game, you just need nice mechanics, and help give the player an enjoyable experience. The other details added are a bonus, but you'll feel great accomplishment when you manage to complete these.
Overall,
Level of difficulty in programming, but accomplishment and creativity:
Sonic > Mario
Simplicity, enjoyable, and still effective
Mario> Sonic
Thanks for taking your time in reading my opinion

What does this have to do with project ideas?
Well, where else would ComputerCrazy put it?
"Project Ideas
A place to give and get help thinking of project ideas."
ComputerCrazy is getting help deciding on what character to use for his game
Mario has 100+ games and an extremely large amount of power-ups. Sonic does not have that many games and has no power-ups that i can think of.
1 for Mario.
although, there is Mario and Sonic at the olimpics.
